How long does it usually take to hear back from state universities/colleges after you've sent in your application?

It depends upon the college. If the college has rolling admission, you may hear within about 2 months.
The later you applied, the longer it will take the rolling admission college to notify you.
When my son applied to public colleges with rolling admission, he applied to two in Sept., and got his first admission in mid Oct., his second around Thanksgiving.
He applied to another college with rolling admission in early Nov. Even though they lost some of his paperwork, which caused their decision to be delayed, he heard in early March.
