Discus: What Are My Chances?: January 2003 Archive: Junior/senior classes for med school
By shark62905 on Saturday, January 11, 2003 - 06:39 pm: Edit

hey im a sophomore in hs and i am already positive that i want to be a doctor. i need advice on what classes i should take the final two years to prep for pre-med. if i ca, i may want to finish up college early and take those combined 6 year programs. i have straight A's so far and hoping to keep them up with a lot of AP and honor's classes. right now i dont need much advice on EC's and stuff im just worrying about what classes to take...

jr year im considering..
AP US History
AP Chem
AP Bio
Language Arts HN
Pre-Calculus HN
Spanish 2

sr year
for sure
-AP Government/Econ HN
-AP Physics B
-AP Language Arts
-AP Calculus AB or BC
and to fill up the other 2 classes..
-early dismissal
-or Spanish 3
-or AP spanish
-or Symphonic Band/Marching Band
-or Anatomy/Physiology

I've already taken Spanish 1, and since i hear that a few years of foreign language is recommended, i may take spanish in the summer at a community college and make myself able to take AP spanish, but i don't know if i really want to take another AP course like that. I also am reluctant on taking the non-honors classes because it will bring down my GPA, but i don't mind taking them 1) if i have to, 2)to have an easier senior year 3) if there's nothing else to take. i'll be able to take six classes each year. Any other advice or classes to suggest would be appreciated.

thx in advance

That'll keep you plenty busy as a junior. Good choices.

Can you take AP Econ as a senior? If you can only do honors, here's what I would recommend:

AP Government/Econ HN
AP Physics B
AP Language Arts
AP Calculus BC

I am also confident I want to become a physician, and here's what I did:

Junior year:

AP Calculus
AP Physics
AP Computer science
Honors Chemistry
Honors English
Advanced Spanish = Spanish 4, most schools have ap spanish this year

Summer, at a local college:
Biology 1, lab
Biology 3
Art (unrelated, school requirement)
Multicultural Psychology
This year:

AP Spanish
AP Economics/AP Political Science
AP English
AP Chemistry

College: biochemistry (completed - goes by semesters), Calculus (completed), Safety and Ethics in research (completed), this seminar thingy (completed), First Aid/CPR (completed)

In progress at college:
multivariable calculus, cell and molecular engineering, microeconomics, hardware assessment (just some computer class I'm taking for A+ certification)

Will take after this quarter:

Multivariable calculus (part II), intro. to BME (kinda did it backwards, the other class is more advanced), and some other stuff.

Hope this helps!

PS you probably don't have to do as much as me..I'm just trying to make up for lost time - partied and played too much the other years...

You must get tons of homework. AP Bio is like 3 hours alone. Can't stand it.
