Discus: What Are My Chances?: January 2004 Archive: I'm new here..please give comments!
By Udontknowme (Udontknowme) on Saturday, January 03, 2004 - 11:23 pm: Edit

Hi, I'm a junior at a prestigious public school in NYC and I know that I am only a junior but I am starting to worry about college. Mt school is considered to be very hard so my GPA is lower than it would be in a regular public school. I am mostly interested in Boston U, Boston College and NYU.

I am expecting my average to be around an 88 this term (which ends around Feb 1).
PSAT- v-56 m-60- i'm planning on taking a course (either princeton review or kaplan) this spring before the may 1st SAT. My goal is to receieve a 1300-1350. (hopefully)I'm in all honors classes and have been since freshman year. I am currently taking Math B(term 2), U.S. History, physics, english, latin and spanish. I plan on taking a.p psychology and a.p. american history next yr. (our school only allows 2)I have only taken 1 sat II (biology) and received a 630. I plan on taking 3 more this year.

I play clarinet in our school's concert band and have been playing for 2 years. I volunteer 4 hours a week at a non profit animal shelter and have been doing so for over 2 years now. I have been on the j.v. softball team for two years and am trying out for the varsity team this year. I am also part of the stage and media tech club. I recieved a silver medal in the National Latin Exam sophomore year and am taking it again this March. I was also being taking college classes senior year.

Any advice or comments would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Stuy, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, or Townsend Harris?

I could swear, you remind me of somebody I know named Amanda who's a junior...except for some of the ECs. It might be stuy cuz of the 2 AP thing, since your average is that low. Coincidentally, the AP policy at Stuy does not apply if your parent writes a letter to administration. Check the programming site for details.

Hard colleges have different standards for NYC Specialized High School Students. If you arent a Stuy student, I can list some of the stats from their stats page. You might have a chance, but you have to realize that you are competing against a lot of very well qualified people.

Stuy College Acceptance Stats (It's huge for these places, so I just included the relevant section.)

oh...cool

I think that you prolly have a good shot at BC and BU. NYU is going to be a stretch, but it still is possible. The sports will definetly help. Try to pull up your grades in the next two terms. Many colleges are looking for scholar-athletes and will accept lower grades from them. Also, colleges do acknowledge that you are in all honors classes. Don't ignore that factor.

My advice would be to shoot higher. Try to get recruited for softball. That helps a lot.

if you take a prep class take Kaplan. I did and it helped me tremendously.
