I'm from California, and I really feel sorry for people who are from states that don't have very good public colleges. Here in California we have 5 or 6 public schools that are in the US News top 50, and a bunch of others that are in the second tier. And I don't just say this for people who can't get in to privates, but also for people who can't afford it. If you're an excellent student in California but can't afford private tuition, you can get a first rate education at Cal or UCLA for a relatively cheap price, but if you're an excellent student who can't afford private and you're from Alabama or Connecticut, well then you're screwed.

Well, here in New York we have ourselves a public Ivy. Sorta.

NC's the best. You can get a great education at UNC-CH, obviously, and UNC-Ashville's a good liberal arts college. NC State's good for engineering, UNC-W is one of the best colleges for marine biology. App State is great for music. Those are just the publics! Basically you just figure out what you want to do with your life and there's a college for it...Some of those may not be first tier, but they're all good schools. Except maybe App.

hey Me..can you tell me where i could find a list of the top (public) high schools?
I must know if my school is on, because they CLAIM to be #1 (O so modest..)

You could probably get it out of the US news, but I think it's something like (in no particular order)

UC-B, UVA, UNC-CH, W&M, UMich, UWSTL, and some others...

By binghamton on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 06:11 pm: Edit

SUNY Binghamton is pretty good, and Buffalo, Stony Brook, and Albany are also almost as good. But not as good as the UC's or UNC-Chapel Hill

By adam on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 06:17 pm: Edit

Also U. of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign is in the top 5 for engineering (overall, not just publics).

By grenaro on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 07:10 pm: Edit

Too bad that the 2nd largest state in population and largest in the continental us only has 2 maybe 3 good publics and about 3 good LACS.

UT Austin-top 50 overall....top 15 public
Texas A&M
Texas Tech

Rice University
SMU
Trinity University

By Californian on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 10:20 pm: Edit

SMU and trinity suck ass. So does Texas Tech. Texans don't care about education, they just want to ride horses and spit tobacco

Californian what a closed mind you have!!

You want me to come in cowboy boots or what? You'll hardly find that in texas, and how can you say texans dont care about education?

You know you're in California if:
1) You make over $250,000 a year and still can't afford a house.
2) Your hairdresser is straight, your plumber is gay, and your Mary Kay rep is a guy in drag.
4)Your child's third grade teacher has purple hair, a nose ring, and is named Breeze.
5) You can't remember... is pot legal?
6) You've been to a baby shower for an infant who has two mothers and a sperm donor.
7)You have a very strong opinion about where your coffee beans are grown, and can taste the difference between Sumatran and Ethiopian.
9) You can't remember... is pot legal?
11) The guy in line at Starbucks, wearing the baseball cap, sunglasses, and looks like George Clooney, IS George Clooney.
12) Your car insurance costs as much as your house payment.
15) Over 85% of the cities, towns, and streets start with San, Los, El, La, Santa, De La, or De Los.
17) A family of four owns six vehicles.
19)Even if the store is across the street, you drive there.
20)Yeah, you're sure.. pot is legal.
21) And finally, a question:
Q. How many Californians does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A. None. Californians cannot afford to turn any lights on!

funny, texas!

i live in georgia and our public school are ranked 50/51 in the nation, in front of washington dc. however, my public school was ranked #4 four in the nation 2 or three years ago. now, just because a state has a low ranking in general doesnt mean that there arent great schools there!

um excuse me but UT and A&M are 2 of the largest schools in the country and are both great schools.

Texas Tech is half the size of UT and A&M but is by far the number 1 place to party. And, um, no we dont ride horses and spit tobacco. Maybe we don't care as much about education as some of the IVY league geeks on this board, but believe it or not It does take a decent classrank/sat score to get in.
