this is "affirmative action" of a sort, just packaged differently.

This form of "affirmative action" benefits Latinos the most. It hardly benefits Asians. When you write "hardships" essays, it benefits Latinos, which an overwhelming majority are working-class, and some low-income white families. Sure it helps black families, which tend to be fragmented. Many black families, however, who do apply to college are not working-class.
