Well there has been a lot of talk about how asians post on this forum and how they are simply showing off their accomplishments. This does not simply apply for Asians, rather it is present in all ethnic groups. Out of all the white seniors in America there are bound to be countless "overachievers." As a not-so fortunate Asian with mediocre scores, this stigma is even worse for me to overcome. Don't hate the group, hate the person
By Mike on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 12:13 am: Edit
Hey man, i don't hate the group...however i am sorry to tell you that a lotta people do have this stereotype of the "Asian Achiever". (i.e. very big into awards but they have a dull personality). This stereotype is only enhanced when people are at science and math tournaments and see Asians racking up trophies. I can also tell u another main reason why this stereotype exists: at MIT (the so-called "nerdiest" school) 38 % are asian, while asians only account for like 3.8% of the American population.
but u are right, in any group, race, whatever...there are bound to be nerds, jocks, etc.
There may be some Asian nerds at these tournaments, but there are also "Asian Pride" gangs in los angeles and california. (two sides of the spectrum)
Anyway, good luck with your scores and applying to colleges.

Well, last year I received 1st place at all the state level math and science competitions. I also recieved a 1600 SAT and 800/800/800/800/800/790 SAT2s (I was sick when I got the 790). I have nerd pride and chill at nerd's mansion. Don't mess with me or I'll triangulate your brainwaves and beam them back at you with ultra high frequencies... waaah!
By Kim Hye Jin on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 01:36 am: Edit
Not to mention every Asian race has their own gangs. The Chinese have their Triads, the Japanese have their Yakuza, the Koreans their Killers, the Viets their entire population (LOL j/k but Viets tend to be in gangs more than any other Asians.) However to all the true hardworking Asians out there, these people are a disgrace and are looked down upon by the true Asians. IN fact, many of the wannabe Asian gangstas parents have disowned them. I don't blame them they truly are a disgrace and bring shame to all Asians everywhere.

I am Chinese (real Chinese, not American borned); I have no E.C., a SAT score of 1420 (620 V + 800 M), and a class rank of barely top 15%. I don't give a damn to school and skip classes almost every other day.
YET I AM ACCEPTED TO MIT WITH E/A.
So to the H.E.L.L. with those calling MIT the nerdiest school. MIT is my hero!!!

You'll fail out of MIT if you keep that up...

MIT is also the biggest party school in Boston. She has a mild rule on drinking and distributes condoms to anyone interested... She is just my kind of school!!!

I seldom see any Chinese kids in Sports or Leadership activities at my school. Sure, we all excel in school Academically, but only a few of us are into stuff like Athletics, Community Service, and Clubs. I believe this is due to the traditional Chinese beliefs we were raised to hold. Throughout Chinese history, studying like a fanatic has been the only way by which all Chinese middle-class may raise their social rank and the social rank of their descendants. It is a way of life ingrained in many American Born Chinese children's parents, and naturally, the parents seek to pass this belief on to their children. I don't mean to preach but rather make it clear that Chinese children are living by centuries-old ethnic codes which are less effective in an environment such as America than they were in an environment such as Dynastic or even Communist China. Don't blame them for their culture but seek to understand it and learn from the good aspects of that culture.

Even with the traditional Chinese beliefs, I can't see how anyone wouldn't like sports! For one thing many Asians dominate in the sport of volleyball.
I'm not too great at that sport but I am really into soccer and basketball. If you haven't been under a rock over the past year you may have noticed that both Japan and South Korea advanced deep into the World Cup and nearly won the whole thing! However back in the U.S. there might be just a larger population of those "nerds." Anyways just watch out if I face you on the the soccer field when I blaze past your defenders and blast a bicycle kick though the net!

I like your attitude. It's like mine.
Being excellent means not only studying well but also being the best in all other areas of school.
Keep up the good work.
By mitrocks on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 03:36 pm: Edit
Another point for this forum:
Who gives a damn about being excellent or well-rounded? If you love sport, go out and play sport. If you love math, stay in your house and study calculus of variation. If you love community service (yeah, I know you all just LOVE to help other people), go to a local hospital and be a slave labor. People should do things because of their passions, NOT because of wanting to appear well-rounded/excellent and to score some points with ivies/UC's...

MIT a party school? LOL I highly doubt that.
By someone on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 05:06 pm: Edit
i am indian and not academically gifted, just a hard worker. I think people forget that the majority of asian teenagers in this country right now come from parents who are immigrants or are immigrants themselves. So they only know to work hard. I am not the "typical" asian. I am class president and am involved in sports and clubs. Total opposite of what most people think of asians. You will see a big change in asians in the next generations. Also MIT is not a party school, my cousin goes there and she says that she has to go to boston college or boston university to go to parties most of the time.
By mitrocks on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 05:06 pm: Edit
Do you know that MIT used to show porn in its public "theater" the first day of every semester?
The last one is "The Deep Throat"!
By Chang 2002 on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 05:41 pm: Edit
Someone,
You say that you're not the typical Asian. Well what exactly is? LOL I hate to break it you but many Asians are involved in clubs and sports. I don't even know how the non-athletic, uninvolved bookworm stereotype for Asians got started in the first place. Because AA works against Asians, most Asians have to do far more than just get good grades and score high on the standardized tests. We also have to do many EC's as well as develop some talent that makes us stand out from the rest. The majority of the Asians from Ivy Leagues, MIT, Stanford, Cal Tech, Duke, all have EC's as well as other special talents on their resumes (LOL how else could they have gotten in?) Anyways the next generation in Asians might change but I doubt it. Chinese people in particular have been adopting to the centuries old philosophy that education is the only way to get ahead in this world. Confucian ethics as they call it.

True, true, true. I play Varsity Basketball and I am in Student Council. Most Chinese kids that I know, however, are not like me or Chang (If Chang's Chinese, that is). Most Chinese kids would rather play Computer Games rather than Sports. In truth, a lot of Chinese kids have stopped studying hard. They sit home every day doing nothing besides playing Computer Games. Yes, there is basis for the stereotype that Chinese kids may be nerdy or anti-social. However, just like any stereotype, it only applies to certain individuals within the Chinese ethnic group.

"True, true, true. I play Varsity Basketball and I am in Student Council. Most Chinese kids that I know, however, are not like me or Chang (If Chang's Chinese, that is)."
I'm as Chinese as they come lol.
"Most Chinese kids would rather play Computer Games rather than Sports."
Some of them are like that. Not me though, I love basketball lol!
"In truth, a lot of Chinese kids have stopped studying hard. They sit home every day doing nothing besides playing Computer Games."
The only computer game I play is GTA Vice City. As for studying, I don't think there has been a day in my life where I have not studied. Thanks to my parents, I study when there is nothing to study for lol!
"Yes, there is basis for the stereotype that Chinese kids may be nerdy or anti-social. However, just like any stereotype, it only applies to certain individuals within the Chinese ethnic group."
Of course not all Chinese kids are smart. Some are very stupid, some do nothing but study, some are popular, some are popular and smart. The idea that all Chinese kids are smart is nothing more than a stereotype. However, I believe that stereotypes have to be true a majority of the time otherwise it wouldn't be a stereotype. You don't just make them up.

Seriously, MIT is a huge party school, these are the reasons:
1.) ALL the students that attend MIT were nerds and losers in high school, never got an action(if you know what i mean). When they get to college, they want to have a great time.
2.)Read number 1
3.) NO ladies at MIT, so they become all depressed and get mad wasted (drunk)
By nope on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 07:26 pm: Edit
Actually, MIT has a 50/50 ratio. Of course that's cuz their acceptance rate for girls is like 3 times as that for guys.
By dogboy on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 07:31 pm: Edit
Yeah but all of MIT`s girls are mad fugly.

Lettme explain what happens at MIT
The fugly MIT girls are really horny, but they are also f##king ugly. Too ugly for the MIT guys to bang them. SO since the girls are so super ugly, it is like there are no girls at MIT, the fugly girls look like ugly men. Thus, the actual MIT guys think the MIT girls are actually men.
By ithinkasiangirlsareugly on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 07:49 pm: Edit
lots of asian girls at MIT
*cringes*
By indiachik on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 09:17 pm: Edit
I am sure people think u are really ugly too
By mitrocks on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 09:37 pm: Edit
dogboy, have you even been to MIT? How the hell do you know that girls at MIT are ugly? I went to MIT this summer, and girls there are pretty hot by any standard, though I have to admit that the female faculties are something else. But still, even the graduate program in pure math got some really hot girls.
And dogface, what community college are you going to?

1.) I dont really think cornell is a bad school, it is a fine institution, i`m just messin with your mothaf##kaz.
2.) I`ve been to MIT, the women are fugly and i know kids who have told me there is no one to date at MIT. They get drunk, but dont have sex with other MIT women since the ladies are fugly.
PEOPLE WHEN YOU SEE MY MESSAGES, F##KING RELAX

Screw who ever says Asians are dull- either fun or smart. I have my own punk band. 4.68 GPA. high school valedictorian, captain of my soccer team and Academic Decathlon team. For those Asians who want to see more Asians, I would suggest coming to the Bay area in California, 90% of the people are Asian.
