i'm thinking of applying to the secondary program, is it selective? is it good?
how many people apply and how many get rejected?
By Liz (Liz) on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 09:18 pm: Edit
It's not selective. But it may help. I've heard it's good, if you want to know. I'd recommend something less expensive though. Colleges don't like to see priveleged-ness...
By weirdscience on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 09:25 pm: Edit
does that mean i will def get in if it's not selective?
By ... on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 09:30 pm: Edit
i wouldnt say its not selective...just not highly, highly selective.
i'd suggest that you do it. if dr. lue is teaching a biology course...take it. he's one of the best professors that actually teach well. he also happens to be an undergraduate director (mcb) at harvard and a recommendation from him would probably due wonders for your applications.

Harvard gives financial aid..I took a course FOR FREE (i was a minority commuter though)!
my psats at the time 169 index (1050)
does that sound selective to you? I did have a 4.0 tho...
By DELSIE on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 09:48 pm: Edit
ABOUT 5000 APPLYK, 1000 GET IN WEIRD SCIENCE! GAD THAT WAS A CRAP MOVIE!!!!!!!!!
By weirdscience on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 10:03 pm: Edit
so it is selective?!!!!!!!!!!
By .. on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 10:07 pm: Edit
NOOOO..was that 1050 not clear enough for ya?
If you are willing to pay you're in.if you cant afford it you MIGHT be in.
By jhjg on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 10:08 pm: Edit
that 1050 came from a URM. ha. a 1050 IS considered selective for a URM...lol.
By buckfeet on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 10:11 pm: Edit
are multiracial people URM?
By ladida on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 10:18 pm: Edit

you are all so immature!
By dxiw on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 10:29 pm: Edit
ok this is just making me mad. please can some of you act mature for once. there are too many people on this board making random idiotic posts like ladida did. If your going to post answer the question, what the hell is the point of being retarded and making all these stupid posts. Perhaps the worst thing is when someone sits down to type out their stats or someone asks an important question and they get a response thats stupid and or immature. Also, in some of these posts the racism is just terrible. Please, if your going to post answer the question if not then DONT POST. I mean if you have the urge to beat on your keyboard like a moron why don't you turn around and beat on your head and maybe something will click. I just can't stand all these people making retarded posts. If someone asks a question then make a knowledgeable response that answers the question or says something about it, nobody cares if your a retard and have to make posts like "feeetttttttttttt". Also, if somebody got into a good college and they are an URM, instead of being jealous cause your ass was rejected tell them good job. We really don't need those kind of posts. If I had to name 2 types of people on this board who are incredibly annoying and just overall mean or dumb it would be the jealous racists and the retareds. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an URM or anything I just think that racism is wrong. Also, the excessive retarded posting really has to stop and I don't mean this convo but like almost every one here. Its really annoying to see posts like "weeeeee" or "buck feetttttt" grow up already guys...

Oh, and also, Weirdscience. Did your school receive brochures about this Harvard Summer School deal or did you find it online yourself? If you know where I can obtain additional information regarding the summer school, please tell me. I would like to try it as well. Thank you.

By Azn_Cowboy (Azn_Cowboy) on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 02:29 pm: Edit
Why was it free for you? What made you different fromt he other applicants? Are you a minority? Are you poor? Are you extremely intelligent as well as diligent? Tell me please. If I can, I certainly wish to go to that summer school for free. Thanks.
By harvard summer school on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 03:04 pm: Edit
well im poor.
if you're not, then yeah its really expensive.
i'm a minority too, but that doesnt affect financial aid.

By r on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 05:08 pm: Edit
they have a chart somewhere for that..it depends on the number of ppl in your family too.

Can someone post a link to any financial aid information associated with the SSP/Secondary HS Program as I have been unable to find any procedures for applying for Aid et al. anyone taken anything in the history/government area from the past, was it worth it?

It wasn't very selective (from what I hear) but it was a blast. I'm from the sticks, mind you. I understand that that changes my perspective on a number of humdrum things, like public transportation (what a marvel!) And even though it's not uber-selective, it still attracts ambitious intellectuals (who else would spend their summer paying to study?) so the atmosphere is enriching, if you don't mind the collective neurosis of a dormful of people worrying about college applications.
A less-commonly-thought-of advantage to the programs is the chance to work with great professors. My anthropology professor was terrific and we actually talked several times (that was intimidating; re:boy from sticks) and he agreed to write me a letter of rec. I don't know if it helped enormously, but I used it on my stanford app and got in. So there you go.
By Wanksta33 on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 11:43 pm: Edit
I went to the Summer program in 2002, hoping it would give me the edge towards getting in there as an undergraduate. I ended up w/ an A in both my courses there and got a great rec (along w/ 1570 SAT, 800 IIC, great interview and whatnot). However, I got deferred from Harvard itself. If you have to bear the blunt of the fee, the time is probably better spent somewhere closer to home.
By haha on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 11:50 pm: Edit
im sorry, but that is too funny. You TRIED too hard. Harvard could tell you did all that just to get into college, not cuz you love learning (forgive me if i assume incorrectly).
Did you feel like you got played?
By dxiw on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 12:19 am: Edit
hey wanksta33,
how hard was it? a lot of studying or a lot of fun? Could you please tell me like a typical days workload, I probably will go, but I really want an A.
By fze on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 12:24 am: Edit
i got a B+ in govt= URM...
it was soooooooooo easy
but only two tests..both essay tests. i got B A..grr
By dxiw on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 12:43 am: Edit
I am probably going to take macro and micro economics, but I have to make A+'s or my parents will be really mad, how difficult should that be?
By nathanmo on Sunday, January 12, 2003 - 04:09 pm: Edit
Three of my friends took macro and micro (it was an odd coincidence), and they all hated it. Only one got an A.
By Wanksta33 on Friday, January 17, 2003 - 12:38 pm: Edit
I studied for maybe 30 minutes a day (at most) and got an easy A...I ended up doin stuff like goin downtown, playin tennis and goin to movies with girls, playin ultimate, etc. Yeah, I had some fun there in Boston, but I can think of a hell of a lot I could have done w/ 8,000 bucks...
By Wanksta33 on Friday, January 17, 2003 - 12:41 pm: Edit
haha-
I got into UChicago and still expect to get into MIT, babe. We'll see who gets the last laugh....muhahahhhhaha. Peace.

Does anyone know of a summer program at a good college that lasts for 7-8 weeks besides the Harvard SSP? I've been hearing mixed reviews for Harvard and, frankly, I'm not sure if the SSP really help me.
Anyway, I want to take a thorough program. I'm afraid 6 weeks is too short, and I really want something that's longer. Money should be okay; seems like Harvard has the highest tuition, lol.
