College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: December 2003 Archive: Do I have a chance??
By Cazarin (Cazarin) on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 11:09 pm: Edit

The two hardest schools that I applied to are University of Virginia and William & Mary's.

My GPA is about 3.5,

I'm in the top 10% (I don't know my rank yet)

I've taken 5 maths (all the way up to AP Calc)

3 years of Japanese (I would've taken 4 but I was transferred my senior year and the new school didn't offer Japanese 4)

I also took AP History, AP Government, AP Economics, and AP Lit.

My SAT is 1180 (Verbal - 620, Math - 560)
My SAT II is: Writing - 600, Math IC - 600, and History - 560 (I know these aren't the best...)

I've been in a bunch of clubs and I've also participated in numerous community activities.

I also just moved here from Japan, and I'm hoping that this helps me.

So, do you think I have a chance? I'm a pretty good writer, or so I'm told, so I'm hoping that my essays help me.

I also have one other question, I don't really know how the SAT II works. What is the highest score you can get? And what is considered a good score?

Thanks for any help!!

both schools are reach. I am guessing you are from VA.. me too. I was about to apply to UVA but I didn't take SAT II's. Yeah> I would say 30% of getting in.

I am also applying to UVA and William and Mary. Because of your recent move, I do not think that you will have instate ststus, but if you do, that will help you a lot. UVA's instate acceptance rate is 53%, where out of state is 39%. The highest SATII score that you can get is an 800. For WM and UVA you should have 650+, and more to compenstate for your SAt 1 scores. Being a foreigner will def. help as UVA and Wm look for diversity. ALso, your AP scores will be a factor. Consider retaking the SAt II's in jan. what citizenship do you have? also is the gpa weighted or unweighted. without this info, i can't make an informed guess on admission.

Thanks so much for the answers!! lol, I'm American, but my dad is Air Force, that's why I've been living over seas. The GPA is unweighted. So, if the highest you can get is an 800, is a 600 good?

USAF rocks. Is he a pilot? Anyways

600 is around the 50th percentile in most SATIIs. If you want to bring up your scores, you'd better sign up for the January tests (if UVA and William+Mary let you submit January scores) in the next few days

go to the SAT website if you want more information on SAT2s:
