you are valedictorian and have a 1460?? now that talks poorly about your school
By Nycschoolss (Nycschoolss) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 11:08 pm: Edit
True that Varr, I was thinking about the same thing. The highest GPA in school history with a 1460 SATs? Whoa, your school aint competitive at all! Some of the NYC specialized Hs has an AVERAGE of 1400+, so if you go to a REAL competitive school, you would probably just be average.
Harvard - Highly unlikely you wont get in
Yale - Same as harvard
Penn (yea!) - Possibly, depends on school, if Wharton , you probably wont get in. Others, you have a chance.
Columbia - Also depends - If applying to FU, you will probably get in, regular Columbia, mostly not.
BU - highly possible you will get in.
GW (legacy) - highly possible you will get in.
NYU - highly possible
Emory - Possible
NOTE : Nothing about you stands out - You are just another person with high average.
The only thing that stands out is a negative thing... is that you are the valedictorian of a school with 700+ and have such a low SATs.

dont listen to them.
sat's dont matter for anything.
i am in brown ED with a 1370. i just have a really good application. just make sure you cant describe your activities well and make sure you use extra paper in describing them. dont describe everyone of them but certainly more than 4 with prob a short 3 sentence paragraph each?
that ny kid doesnt know what he is talking about. like as long as you show personality on your app then you are in. a 1400+ is so good. i wish i broke 1400

Im Valedictorian and I have a 1130 on my SAT.
My school has 786 students

thanks sw4y. As you the other two, I don't think that my taking one test can allow you to draw conclusions based on the cometitiveness of my class. I think you are too hung up on SATs, which don't measure anything except eigth grade math. Did you fail to realize that I got 5's on AP calc, chem, american, psych, and spanish? it just so happens that my class is extremely, EXTREMELY competitive. I will be graduating with 15 AP courses, A's in all of them mind you, and it isn't even a sure bet that I'll be val. you're hung up on the wrong things (SATs).

how do u get a 5.8 and 6.73?
for us an AP class gets weighted as a 5.0 but thats it. Even a 4.5 is impossible to get

Amen
By Spacechic20 (Spacechic20) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 11:53 pm: Edit
For us APs are weighted as 6. I have a 5.8 now but when it is updated midyear it will be a 6.73

can anyone tell me my chances for Penn (the College) especially?
By Interesteddad (Interesteddad) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 02:32 am: Edit
Spacechic:
The goal, IMO, is not to throw everything including the kitchen sink on your list of activities. It is preferable to narrow the focus down to one or two things that your are really passionate about. From your list, I can't tell what those are.
By Twinkletoes696 (Twinkletoes696) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 03:11 am: Edit
Bringing up that point, Interesteddad, I've been meaning to ask you something- if you don't mind, will you email me? I'd rather not post it publicly or for anyone to take my half-baked idea, but I read your posts about your daughter's Swat strategy in application/acceptance (Btw congrats!) so I figured you would know if I had the right idea.

To sw4y - While i realize that Brown is an awesome school but it aint no harvard or Yale. I also agree that SAT's isnt everything but to Harvard it is 1 out of many things you need to passed to gain admission and his SAT's dont cut it.
Spacechic - Ok, answer this question - point out something that makes you a "hook" to colleges? If you have a hard time telling me this than why would the colleges pick you? And i told u, upenn Wharton, you basically have no chance... But other colleges in Upenn is considerably easier to get into and u have a slim chance in getting in.

AP Sores, 4 on the u.s history, and a 2 on the ap english
Many hrs of volunteer and involved with 3 different clubs.
i ALSO SPEAK GREEK.

will the 2 on the ap hurt my chances?

my hooks?
1- science: i did research, i explained my project and attached the abstract. I explained my results and explained where I submitted my project to. i also do science demonstrations at local elementary schools and am my school's nominee for Silver Knight in Science. I am head of the science competition team at my school, am VP of SECME and president of Science Honor Society.
2- piano. as i said, i submitted a CD of me playing the piano, explained that i performed for Joseph Lieberman by invitation, and earned a superior rating at the Superintendents Honors Music Festival.
and my the way, in response to your first message about my "low" SAT score, did u fail to realize that I scored a 34 (equivalent to 1520-1550) on the ACT?
By Encomium (Encomium) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 05:30 pm: Edit
i wouldn't worry space chic
when i saw that i thought that it just gave further proof that the SAT's are worthless
NTCE/AP English shows more than 700 V/730 Writing
I think this is why the AP people decided to grade ona 5 point scale not an 80 point scale...because really there's not difference other than a few questions between a 700 and an 800....it's really pointless
By Deeny1414 (Deeny1414) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 05:34 pm: Edit
Actually I'd argue that Brown's admission process can be a lot harder. You never know who they will accept/defer/reject. A lot of times w/ Harvard, you can at least tell who they will defer or reject, same w/ Yale, but Brown is a toss up.
By Spacechic20 (Spacechic20) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 10:22 pm: Edit
thanks, encomium. deeny1414,i completely agree with you. one of my friends got deferred from brown (shes hispanic too!) and she was very qualified to attend. my cousin, about 6 years ago, applied also and wasn't admitted. she took a year's break between high school and college to try to get in again the next year but still didnt make it. she did, though, get into UPenn, where she had a 4.0 GPA. This goes to show that she was very qualified and it's really an abitrary process.

i'd particularly like input about my chances for penn and columbia, particularly. thanks

In my opinion, you're in at just about any school. Your SAT is NOT low at all, nycschools is mostly wrong. Harvard takes plenty of kids with lower SAT's, you're at least above the 25% mark.
And I think the rest of what you do makes you stand out.
Be optimistic, make sure your essay is great, and you'll be fine.
1460 is not low at all!!!
good luck.
By Spacechic20 (Spacechic20) on Thursday, December 25, 2003 - 10:45 pm: Edit
thanks, actually reelcool it's possible to have higher than a 6.0 because they take all honors points and divide them by 15. then they add that to the unweighted.
By Ebudes (Ebudes) on Friday, December 26, 2003 - 06:30 pm: Edit
A 1460 is a little bit low for Yale, but that's okay because the adcoms seem to be admitting more people with lower SAT scores. Your SAT II scores are average, but they shouldn't hurt your chances that much.
OK, here are my ratings of your chances:
Yale - 7
Penn - 8
Columbia - 8
BU - 10
GW - 10
NYU - 9
Emory - 10
The reason why I gave you lower ratings on the Ivies, is because there are so many applicants that have almost the exact same stats as yours. However, if your essays and recommedations are stellar, you will mostly definitely stand out from the crowd.
Good luck!
