As you can see, the essay means virtually NOTHING when it comes to the points for gaining admission to UMich.
In addition, just being a URM gave tenisghs +20.
Furthermore, she only needed 80 to get the admit, while every other non-URM needed to gain 100 (probably a result from the +20)
This can be confirmed on the previously mentioned link:{http://www.michiganreview.com/feature.php,http://www.michiganreview.com/feature.php}.
But tenisghs also made a good point-- the SAT scores didn't mean much, but neither did her essays (even if they were "great", she only got 3 points for them). Being URM gained her +20... well, good for her. What I find most unfortunate is how upper-middle class "URM's" can also benefit from this same treatment. Granted, there probably aren't many, but the URM's that fall under this category aren't socioeconomically disadvantaged at all and therefore shouldn't be treated as thus.

And is this Michigan Review Admissions calculator even a valid site? I thought admission information like that is held confidential? I think it's a hoax just to stir up some hate. I just played it for the hell of it and scored 123 points out of 150. If I needed 80 points, well I was certainly overqualified.

It's valid. There's the whole Supreme Court case, the point system has been on several news outlets, and you can even read the copy of the admissions policy they obtained.
