By Me on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 08:06 pm: Edit

This girl from my school had a 1350 and about a 3.8 (WEIGHTED!) and got into Yale! She's white, by the way. The thing is, she is the granddaughter of a multi-millionaire who donated over $500,000 to Pres. Bush's campaign, and the president wrote her a letter of reccomendation! This is more unfair than affirmative action.

By You on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 08:11 pm: Edit

It's called power and networking, me. If you ain't got it, you lose out. What are your options? Continue to be put down or become powerful yourself.

By Dadster on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 08:19 pm: Edit

My guess is she had some other stuff going for her than a letter from the Prez... Celebrity letters that don't provide first-hand knowledge of the candidate aren't weighted heavily, though a presidential alum isn't too shabby. More likely, she was considered a "development" candidate because of her grandfather's wealth - unfortunately, money can still talk in elite admissions. These schools don't admit many kids for development reasons, though.

By i cannot get into yale either on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 10:25 pm: Edit

that's awesome! hehe, who cares, money=influence. use it wisely you rich b.a.s.t.a.r.d.s!

College admissions for sale!
College admissions for sale!

If she gets in, it's disgusting. You would think academia would have more morals.

By anonymous on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 10:35 pm: Edit

Money and connections could get you anywhere in life, it's no wonder that girl got into Yale with those stats. Stuff like this happens all the time.

By BAstards on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 10:40 pm: Edit

The ironic thing is that George W. shouldn't have gotten into Yale either. Do you know that he got a 1260 on his SAT? A white male from a rich familly with a 1260....sounds like the perfect formula for getting into an IVY these days.......(NOT)

By no one on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 10:43 pm: Edit

F*#@ing Legacy needs to go.

By asdf on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 11:11 pm: Edit

george w took the old version of the sat, where the mean for yale was 1320. his score of 1260 isn't too shabby or outlandish. it is the equivalent of a 1400 today...not necessarily up to yale's average, but respectable.

By wrong on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 11:35 pm: Edit

No... the old version of the sat you're talking about was prior to 1967--Dubya graduated a few years after that. By the way, Bush got a 1206, not 1260.

By Healthy_Body (Healthy_Body) on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 11:56 pm: Edit

Well. Regardless what GW actually got, I think we all know he's underqualified. The man is a self-proclaimed "C" student and he often can't compose a correct sentence haha. Too bad my dad isn't a senator.

By Shoshana on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 11:58 pm: Edit

With all the problems going on in the world, I'm glad that Bush is spending his time on such productive activities.

By bush on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 12:26 am: Edit

Hmm... What in the world could Bush write as a "recommendation" for this girl? "Her grandfather donated money to my campaign. Must be a great girl." If he really did write a recommendation, then I agree with Shoshana that it's pretty ridiculous given the world's problems. Hey, by the way, I'd like to post part of a CNN article from today:

Speaking to reporters in Crawford, Texas, where he is spending the New Year's holiday, Bush brushed aside questions on whether war with Iraq could cripple the U.S. economy.

"This economy cannot afford to stand an attack," Bush said. "And I'm going to protect the American people. The economy's strong. It's resilient. Obviously, so long as somebody's looking for work, we've got to continue to make it strong and resilient."

Is it just me, or does this statement not make much sense?? Regardless, it shows our President's profound lack of depth.

By no one on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 12:29 am: Edit

When did they change the SAT? I thought you could only score mulitples of 10 on it.

By asdf on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 01:48 am: Edit

wrong,

you are an idiot...the SATs scoring/recentering have changed a couple of times....the lastest one being 1994-5...NOT 1967. look at yale's SAT averages when george w was applying to colleges...and you will see that his scores were a little low, but respectable.

By bump on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 04:08 pm: Edit

bump dis shizzle

By Wrong Again on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 08:21 pm: Edit

Hmm... you yourself seem to acknowledge that "the SAT scoring/recentering [has] changed a couple of times." All I ever said was that it did change in 1967, not that it didn't change in '95 (It did!). By the way, as I said, Bush got a 1206 on his SAT, so it seems that you were the one who was wrong (it was not a 1260 buddy). A 1206 may be okay, but no one but you calls it respectable. Add that to the self-proclaimed 'C' average and you have a profoundly indistinguished scholar. I dare you to respond.

By retardeddubya on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 08:41 pm: Edit

hey... i think we're all forgetting the fact that dubya PAID someone to take the SATs for him...

By asdf on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 08:44 pm: Edit

wrong again,

what high school did george w attend? philips andover academy...at the time, the clear-cut best school in the nation. a C at andover is probably better than an A anywhere else. how many high schools can boast 2 presidents, several congressmen, nobel laureates, judges, heads of state...etc? george w was just being modest by proclaiming a C average in one of his speeches...but in reality, being average at an Ivy feeder school is nothing to scoff at.

a 1206 was respectable back then. what was yale's average when george w applied? a 1275? a 1280? ha! as a matter of fact, before the re-centering in 1994-5 (in which bush's re-centered score would be 1260), the HIGHEST sat average that yale has every had was a 1360 (in the early 90's)!!!! bush's 1206 is probably equivalent to a 1400 now. a 1400 may be low for yale now, but it is respectable and wouldnt surprise most people if a 1400 got into yale.

GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT AND TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE TIMES AND ENVIRONMENT YOU IDIOT!! it takes little effort to respond to an idiot such as yourself.

By LOL on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 08:44 pm: Edit

By Me on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 09:12 pm: Edit

WAIT WAIT WAIT! Are you complimenting Bush for going to Andover? You stated that "being average at an Ivy feeder school is nothing to scoff at." Do you really think that he was at Andover based on his merit? Hahaa he could have gone to any prep school and any college he wanted because of his family. Oh yeah, when he said he was a C student he was talking about college, not prep school. Though Yale is tough, someone who is actually qualified to be there could get way above a C average if they were applying themselves. YOU get it straight, buddy.

By Wrong Yet Again! on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 09:37 pm: Edit

"It takes little effort to respond to an idiot such as yourself"--It seems quite the contrary; you're putting more effort to respond than anyone I have ever seen has.

'Me' is right on the target. With a father who's a Senator, and later Ambassador to the U.N. and director of the CIA, you're a shoo-in. Bush was accepted solely on that basis, and you know it, asdf. And how about those little-known reports about his taking drugs on the Andover campus, and, later at Yale as well?

The truth still stands: Bush WAS NOT and has NEVER BEEN a 'respectable scholar', as you are making him out to be. The majority of Americans know this; many feel that he's a good President anyway, and that's fine with me (still, it's not he doing a good job, it's his advisors). Get a grip on your sorry self, asdf.

By hehe on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 09:55 pm: Edit

Not only was GW's dad a senator, UN Ambassador, and Director of the CIA, he was also a Yale Alum. As was HIS father, Prescott Bush I think.

How could GW NOT have gotten in?

By asdf on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 10:07 pm: Edit

wrong,

i never made him out to be a scholar...i was just trying to stop your bashing of the president. i never said that doing well or resptably on the SAT made you a scholar....but YOU IMPLY THAT. how is doing well on the SAT the same as making you a scholar?

now that i've proven the orginal point that his SAT scores were respectable, all you can do is attack something else...like drug use and family connections....lol.

before the days of grade inflation, a C average at yale wasnt too shabby. not great but not terrible as you imply. if you dont like this country, get out. love it or leave it.

By Adrasteia on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:29 am: Edit

Why the hell would anyone want a letter of recommendation from Bush? His grammar is so horrible they'd think a 12 year old wrote it.

"Our children is learning."

By dsz on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 02:47 am: Edit

"if you dont like this country, get out. love it or leave it."

Since when has G. Dubya become beyond criticism? Since when has "not loving G. Dubya" become equivalent to "not loving USofA"? And since when has our USofA become communist that you have to "love it or leave it"?

By ... on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 03:10 am: Edit

i ask you, since when was it ever patriotic to bash the president when the country was on the brink of war...not to mention having to diffuse a nuclear threat. it has ALWAYS been wrong to bash the president when america is in danger. i suppose that when GW went to nyc right after 9/11 to encourage the workers...he was being a dumbass?

america, love it or leave it.

By adrasteia on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 03:27 am: Edit

ya know, the ONLY reason why we're on the "brink of war" is because some honky wants revenge for his daddy. "Nuclear threat"? That's funny, considering inspectors have been out of Iraq since 98, and it certainly hasn't seemed like a threat until Bush decided to use his newfound political leverage from 9/11 to seek revenge... oops I mean declare war upon a deadly nation that we have been slowly killing with economic sanctions for the past 13 years.
No sane American wants this war; at the best, they're lukewarm about it. This is turning into a second Vietnam. Somebody stop me I'm rambling randomly now.

By 1206? WTF?? on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:26 pm: Edit

How did he get a 1206? You can't get a 1206. It has to be a factor of 10.

By caltech07 on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 06:02 pm: Edit

...,

Idiot. America is not America because of the stupid and cattle-like admiration of its subjects. It's because of informed and intelligent voters who have the balls to criticize their leaders. If you want a government where leaders are worshipped because crisis demands it, go to China or pre-perestroika Russia.

Darn, I have difficulty dealing with stupid people.

By How dare you on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 06:18 pm: Edit

He got a 1206 in about 1970, pal , when you could get a score not based by factors of 10.

I assume that '...' is just being ridiculous for the sake of it. Criticism of the president, and of the government in general, is a hallmark of the American democracy. To take it further, even our founding fathers argued that this democracy is fueled by disagreement. Without it, our democracy would be no more.

People like you are the kind who are a threat to this country; I say to you the same thing: This is America, love it or leave it.. If you don't like freedom of speech then you shouldn't be here. Whoever you are, get off these boards, because you're filth.

By MOS on Sunday, February 09, 2003 - 10:40 pm: Edit

We can argue numbers all day. The fact is GWB could be the poster child for affirmative action. It proves you can be mentaly deficient and still get into one of America's most prestigious universties.
