decent enough

Hmmm, decent. Anyone else?

UCSD is not a backup for you if you are wondering about UCLA. I'd put your UCLA chances at 65% - your SAT/AP scores are below-average for UCLA, but everything else looks quite good. Good luck!
By Kode (Kode) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:02 pm: Edit
I'd also say you have a good chance. I'm just surprised how you've taken so many AP tests and (don't mean to be mean) never done particularly well on any of them. But I like your trying attitude and perhaps the UCLA will see that too. Good luck!
By Andrey1225 (Andrey1225) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:29 pm: Edit
his ACT is right in-line with their average...UC equivalent give 30 a 1340--so i dont know why you're pestering him about his SAT, its not what theyre going to look at/use
By Akikaze (Akikaze) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:55 pm: Edit
The ACT score is average for UCLA, as are the SAT II scores. The AP exam scores are a serious downer, though...taking many of them and never performing exceptionally well on any - and failing 3 - is not what one would expect from a student of UCLA-caliber.
By Shebs (Shebs) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 10:22 pm: Edit
Hmm, well first off...
6 of those exams were taken my junior year, each within a day of one another...
Secondly...
The 3 that i failed happened to be in classes with really horrible teachers...
Thirdly...
Last time i checked, a 4 on an exam is pretty damn good.
Look, don't get me wrong, i know my exams aren't top notch. But i'm not stupid... in fact, my AP scores do not represent my intelligence. I'm not an idiot, i just don't do all that well on timed exams, so don't talk as if i am one.
With that being said, consider my GPA, my rank (i'm in the upper tier of the top 2% of my class), the strength of my senior year classes, and some of my ECs (like the school will do), before giving me your "professional" opinion.
Thanx

We do realize that you are not stupid and the difficulty of the exams you took. You're obviously a hard-working person that is qualified to attend UCLA. However, the competition is fierce.
Go over to the Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford boards - there are tons of kids with 1400+ SAT scores, 4s and 5s on all AP exams getting rejected. Many of these people will, unfortunately, not end up at a top 10 school. They'll end up at schools like Berkeley and UCLA - especially Stanford rejects. The competition from the top 10 schools is starting to spill over into UCs more than any other public school system. (More kids would rather go to California and the Northeast than the South or the Midwest for their education.) It is for this reason that one can no longer say, "You're in!" for schools like UCLA and Berkeley. I stand by my 65% assessment. Just hope for the best. Good luck!

as one of those 1400+ kids who got rejected from stanford (i had 3 5s, 4 4s, and a 3 on the APs) i can justify akikaze's claim; however, of those who got rejected early to top notch schools, many are not going to apply to the UCs. The UC applicant base still remains majorily in-state, and if you look on this post you'll find plenty of students in the 1200s applying to UCLA "for the hell of it". I honestly think of the 50000 applicants suppossed to apply this year maybe only (lol...only) 10000-15000 have SAT scores above 1400s. And many of those don't have as many ECs are special circumstances that shebs has. Although nothings certain, he should still have a good chance.
By Akikaze (Akikaze) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 08:08 pm: Edit
Exactly right. Of course most top-tier school rejects will not apply to UCs if they are out of state - this is why I emphasized Stanford earlier. However, the fact remains that the number of applicants rejected to the top-tier schools is growing, especially from a highly competitive state like California. The quality of students at UCLA and Berkeley has risen drastically and will continue to rise because we are definitely seeing a "competition spillover" from top 10 schools.
Shebs has a good chance - 65%, in my opinion - because s/he has stellar ECs/GPA but average scores.

If people have something to say they will. BUMPing a thread more than once a day is excessive and is against CC policy. Furthermore, it just clutters up the board. Repeat violators will be banned. --Admin

The misconception here, specially in the statement: " The ACT score is average for UCLA, as are the SAT II scores. The AP exam scores are a serious downer, though...taking many of them and never performing exceptionally well on any - and failing 3 - is not what one would expect from a student of UCLA-caliber."
is that one does not remember that places specially like UCLA factor in the individuals performance in context of their respective schools. My school sucks, period. Their average SAT Score is 810 and has been like that for the past 3-4 years. People with under a 1200 get in, and many of them, usually 15-25 students a year. Their SAT IIs are low as well, usually under 680 in all subjects other than spanish since FLUENT speakers take that test and end up scoring high. Passing rate in our school for AP test is low as well, less than 15%. So, if his school is that crappy, then his chance is greater... but if its a highly competitive school, then his chance is lower. However, just because you're "below average" with your SAT scores or even GPA, doesn't really matter unless the person providing stats can provide more of an insight towards the school he/she attends.

Donotdisturb,
You're right - one should view an applicant in the context of their school. However, take a quick glance at his GPA - 4.78 weighted (4.2 UC) and he's ranked 8 out of 600. It should be obvious that his high school is not the kind that you are describing.

yeah, i attend the high school and its considered one of the best in california in terms of an overall high school experience. We have the most AP courses, best football and basketball teams (basketball is arguable) of any school in orange county; and also the state's winning marching band. its a 3-time national blue ribbon high school (apparently only a handful of schools have gotten it 3 times)...some other BS awards. we send about 6-10 kids to ivy or ivy caliber schools each year and about 15-20 to berkeley or LA.....
with that said you can assume its a good high school....even though its public
By Andrey1225 (Andrey1225) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 10:43 pm: Edit
oh, and average SAT score is a tad over 1100; i know of about 6 kids who've gotten over 1500 and 10 or so who've gotten over 1400 (myself included)
