I want your opinions please tell me what i should do.
I'm a sophmore right now, and i'm planning for my next year. My friends told me to do running star with them, which is attend college and get college creadits in junior and senior year. If i do i will major in science and get a AS degree.
Or I can stay in the high school and take my AP classes, which the classes are pretty easy.
I want to know, which choice i should choose that is best to apply for UW.

please help

An AS does not transfer to a university. AS is a terminal degree. An AA is what you need to transfer to a university. An AS degree will get you no where, but you could just take science courses and they would probably transfer. You do not have to get the degree.

Why is AS associated in Science can not transfer to the university?

Just stick it out at your high school with the AP classes.

I'm anti- Running Start. Very anti.

UW isn't that hard though so maybe take your schools APs and then if there's something your school doesn't offer like certain science classes (which I'm sure it doesn't because Washington is ghetto like that) then take those. But don't LIVE for Running Start. It takes you out of the high school community too much.

Where in WA are you from? Which school?

I'm living in WA, I go to a public school, Aberdeen high school.
I also want to go to Berkeley, but i know i'm aiming too high, UC are hard for outstates, Berkeley is one of the hardest.

Berkeley is straight up unfair to out of states when you look at the kinds of kids they accept in-state. I guess they are allowed to do that because the state pays for a lot of the school. I am also a WA resident. the kids who I know who did running start just used it as a way to take fewer classes. Don't take that route. If you choose running start, take a strong curriculum. I still would recomend high school

Yeah, Berekeley is hard to get into anyway, but i will try.
since most of you guys recomend me to take the high school route, i will reconsider running star.
I heard University of Washington has a wonderful medical school, so i want to major in. Do any of you know how should i prepare?

By Aznchuckbrown (Aznchuckbrown) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 02:21 am: Edit

First off in regards to UW Med, it is absolutely HARDCORE. Nearly impossible to be accepted, its like applying to an Ivy, you have to have stellar academic record and that wouldn't even guarantee anything.

To get in though, I heard it was a lot harder for someone from UW under to advance into Med. A good way to prepare is to take classes that Med requires such as biology and also do a lot of internships that relate to Med such as nursing and premed, etc.

There might be other things thatll help you, so a good idea is to contact UW through email or forums or the like and also ask your counselor, as you are in state he/she will probably have a pretty good understanding of UW.

you could get an AS in a wa community college that would transfer to UW, however they are not accepting all transfer students anymore, but great grades in your community college classes would make you look very attractive.

Im not familiar with the community colleges on the coast, if students take and pass AP classes ( and get at least 3s and 4's on tests) I would take AP. But if your friends are going to be at the community college anyway, then do that if they have the classes you want.

UW is very competitive for med school. At this point that is too far off, you may not even want to go into med school when you are done with college let alone the UW.
Focus on challenging yourself in highschool, take calc and stat if you qualify, chem, bio with labs.
You may get a stronger undergrad science experience at a smaller school than the UW. UCs are very competitive for out of states, private schools not as competive more expensive of course but often very good financial aid for students especially from normally not represented high schools.
My doctor went to Stanford and her sister who is also a doc went to Pomona for undergrad. She( my doc) feels that her sister recieved a stronger education.
dont rule out smaller schools.

I Stanford is my dream school. I really want to get in it when i was 8th grade. Later from the books i read, the grades and SAT scores from the students who applied to Stanford, i can't even compare my scores to theirs, so i changed my mind to get in UW, i'm in state probably very easy to get into.

But I still really want to get into Stanford, if you have any sugestions about how can i get into Stanford or any other good private school, i would very please and thank you so very much.
