College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: December 2003 Archive: Carleton, Bowdoin, Oberlin and other LACs

What are my chances at:
Carleton
Bowdoin
Oberlin
Middlebury
Wesleyan
Vassar
Macalester
Amherst
Kenyon

GPA: Top 10% UW
SAT I: 770V, 680M
SAT II: 800, 750, 640 (blah)
AP: 5,5,4,4,4,4..taking three more this year

Do I have a chance at any of these schools, particularly Carleton? I NEED to compare financial aid packages, but Carleton is my top choice. Do you think I have a chance regular decision, or should I go for Winter Early Decision?

Thanks

it depends on how your EC's look... you've listed the dry stats and you look in range for all of them... the deciding factor (ESPECIALLY at LACs) is going to be how you make yourself stand out from the rest of the numbers through your community/school involvement, essays, recs, etc. I think if the rest of your app is good you are set... go for early decision if it is your top choice (but make sure you've researched carleton's financial aid info. first). you have a great shot a carleton!! GOOD LUCK! :)

yeah, sorry i forgot to mention my ecs. they're probably the most solid part of app, lots of community involvement, study abroad, mad political junk, nothing past the regional level though...

saddle creek fan? very, very nice

your stats are in range. that doesn't really mean anything though.

I agree with Allison: your stats are in range, but they don't guarantee anything.

If Carleton really is your first choice, you should apply ED. Your chances for admission are better, and, I believe Carleton is 100% need-blind for ED but less for regular decision.
