Obviously Chicago is a prestigious school. So why is its acceptance rate so high? (I think it's 44%)

because it's too serious there and no one has much fun and no one goes. people who get into chicago often get into other prestigious universities, which are much more exciting.

Because they don't have many applicants. Only some 8000 apply there every year, where as more than twice that many apply to Ivy schools. Chicago accepts 3000 some students and 1000 some enroll.

theres relatively less east coast nerds applying there, thus less competition

What is the opinion of everyone about UChicago? Is it all (academically) that it's cracked up to be? If anyone knows what fields it is particularly strong in........

It's ranked 1st in economics, and also very strong in science in general and premed. I'm not sure though. But it seems like its engineering department is not as strong so I'm not applying there.

Very intellectual and exciting academic place to be, with good teaching. But a very restrictive and heavy core curriculum requirement. Good for some student therefore. It's getting more selective--early apps were up quite a bit this year.

To my opinion:
Chicago doesn't have an engineering program, that's why it's not so strong.

Chicago's essays are unique & difficult. That probably weeds out those applicants who are not so committed.
