College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: December 2003 Archive: AU Early Decision?
By Gracious95 (Gracious95) on Monday, November 24, 2003 - 09:07 pm: Edit

I posted before, but here are my stats updated.

Personal:
First generation Black female from Delaware

GPA: 3.74 UW top 5% of my class

SAT I: 1100 M570 V530

Average Score is an 820.

SAT II: I ended up cancelling the scores, hehe. Say, I took the SAT again, would the fact that they were canceled show on the report sent to colleges?

No APs or Honors (or the like) are offered. My school is a Vo-tech school, so I guess we have shops instead of advanced courses.

My course load was the hardest available, even though it wasn't much.

My letters of recommendation were good, as in they acknowledged my accomplishments and weren't just broad.

I believe my essay is decent too. I sent the same essay with tweaks to all the schools, to make sure their questions were answered without writing a totally different essay.

I'm also a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator. As you may have guessed, shop related.

ECs:

I worked as a junior counselor at the Boys and Girls club (summer job), and I now work at Mcdonald's, I've had that job for a year.

Founder of the Gay-Straight Alliance (11- 12)
Volleyball (11)
Student AID (12)

(I didn't join anything that only consisted of boring meetings, and student government is just a popularity contest, as always !)

Out of School Activities:
Member of the You're Not Alone youth group (10- 12)
Delegate of the Delaware NCCJ (National Conference for Community and Justice (12)
Participated in the award-winning documentary JIM IN BOLD and the artwork Exuberance! (Young Gay America http://younggayamerica.com, http://www.jiminbold.org) (11)
Going to be a panelist in the James Wheeler International Youth panel at Equality Forum 2004 (12)
Second degree black belt and Member of Master John Godwin's Korean Martial Arts Institute (3-9)

My college list is this:

Reaches:
Bryn Mawr (I found out that my courseload doesn't even qualify, so I'm withdrawling)
Mount Holyoke
New York University

Matches:
American University ED (God, I just hate waiting for their decision, LoL.)
Temple University

Safeties:
Pace University
Marist College

Does anyone know any more diverse colleges that would be safeties for me, preferably in a good college town with an active gay community? Please don't say state schools, I really need to get out of Delaware, there's nothing here for me.

I've heard Sarah Lawrence (outside New York City) is pretty diverse and accepting of homosexuality...I'm not sure of their selectivity though.

By The_Slc_Bug (The_Slc_Bug) on Monday, November 24, 2003 - 09:17 pm: Edit

I go there. Sarah Lawrence is very accepting of the gay community--WAY WAY WAY open and our main event is the "Coming Out Dance." In terms of selectivity, the acceptance rate last year was 40%. So it's not a safety, but a possibility.

Have you looked at Howard in DC?

By Gracious95 (Gracious95) on Monday, November 24, 2003 - 09:29 pm: Edit

Too many black people, LoL. I didn't see any diversity in that school .

Is it an HBCU? I've been warned not to attend any.

By Bobby443 (Bobby443) on Monday, November 24, 2003 - 10:22 pm: Edit

Oh, I thought you were using the word "diverse" as meaning as few while people as possible, since thats how lots of people seem to use it these days. I'm pleased to see that you meant it in the correct way.

By Gracious95 (Gracious95) on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 - 09:25 am: Edit

Yup. I like learning about different people and cultures as well as different languages. A school being like 80% black isn't going to really give me that, LoL. So what about AU early decision?

By Bobby443 (Bobby443) on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 - 10:55 am: Edit

well your SAT's are a tad low, but you should realize that ED is equivilant to 100 points higher on the SAT1, so figure you got a 1200, and thats just under their 50th percentile. Add the fact that you're black and you have a very good chance of getting in.

Thanks Bobby, maybe that will lower some of my stress. Anyone else?

By Reba616 (Reba616) on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 - 10:34 pm: Edit

I think you'll get in. Excellent class rank, good ECs.

By the way, don't apply to Marist. My school is a feeder for that college... it's full of the most white-bred, boring, materialistic, suburban kids that you'll ever meet. Not to mention it's in the shithole of Poughkeepsie.

OMG I heard! The thing is, my mommy alrady paid for my SAT scores to be sent there. So, I'm like, mine as well apply without having to pay for scores to be sent again! Trust me, the school's more like a last resort.

You might take a look at Trinity College in D.C.
http://www.trinitydc.edu It's an all female school that has good academics and might be a nice back up for American if you really want to be in D.C. They are also supposedly very good with financial aid if that's any kind of issue.

Another school that comes to mind for you would be Goucher College in Maryland. http://www.goucher.edu

By Gracious95 (Gracious95) on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 - 07:07 pm: Edit

Goucher seems good, and they do send me a lot of junk!

Hey, do you guys think that Temple University is a match or a safety? I always figured it as a safety, but then someone told me it was a match. Why?

By Gracious95 (Gracious95) on Friday, November 28, 2003 - 10:09 am: Edit

bump

By Whzup44412 (Whzup44412) on Friday, November 28, 2003 - 10:21 am: Edit

Temple is a safety. Class sizes are huge (i think it's something like 5,000 students per class, so they probably admit a lot more than that.

Okay, just making sure. How long does it take typically for colleges with rolling admissions to come up with a decision?

Question -- why doesn't your courseload qualify for Bryn Mawr???? Do you mean the classes you took or the no APs? Because schools understand if you don't take APs if your school doesn't offer them ...
