I was accepted ED but didn't receive a very good financial aid package. I know I can decline their offer, but I really do want to go there and I'm trying to work things out with them right now. Is it even possible for a school to release you from the binding commitment yet not make you decline their offer?

Well on the early decision agreements, you agree that you will attend as long as they give you sufficient financial aid. So I don't know what kind of aid they gave you and whether or not it's "sufficient" but you may be able to break out of the decision.
