Discus: What Are My Chances?: October 2003 Archive: Werid Combo of GPA, SAT, ACT, and schools.. NU, UMass Amhers

Ok boys and girls, i screwed up alot during school cause i disliked it alot and that gives me a 2.7 GPA. No questions, its a 2.7. But i did fairly decent on my tests so i neeed to know if i have a chance at Northeastern or UMass Amherst. If I dont get into either of those, I must go to University of North Texas, which I REALLY REALLY dont wanna do. Here are the stats:

GPA: 2.7
RANK: 50/108
SAT: 1200
ACT: 25

I have tons of clubs and community services, I also have some great reccomendations coming from a newspaper editor, a few veterans, and the principal at my school.

Ive held a newspaper job for 2 years and a grocery store job for another 2. I also built and sold computers and did alot of tech support type stuff.

I was born in India but moved here at like 3 Month of age and am a US Citizen.

My parents have degrees in science but they are from Indian schools and i dunno if that works here.

I graduate in May 2004.

Now then...with great reccomendations, decent scores, and some $$$ is it possible for me to get into Northeastern University or UMass Amherst? Im almost positive im in at University of North Texas but i dunno about those out of state schools. Please help me...thanks.

You can't get into a private school worth going to. Just stick with in-state schools, they are the best value and unless you can get into a top private, it is the smartest choice (unless you are rich).

money is no object, well just put it that way so i dont sound like a rich bitch or anything.

And I wanna know if Northeastern or UMass Amherst will accept me, not whether they are worth going to or not.

Take people's assessment of your admission chances on this board with a grain of salt.

Heh. I take people's admissions evaluations on this board with the whole dern salt cellar.

Excuse me...but I've got a freighter full of salt is coming into dock now....

That said, I think you have a shot at UMass/Amherst. 36 percent of their admits are in the second 25 percent of their high school class and your SAT's are a little above average. Write *really* good essays.

i dont know, 2.7 GPA seems kinda low for Northeastern. ???

By Melissamelissa (Melissamelissa) on Monday, October 27, 2003 - 10:59 pm: Edit

yea.....your essay makes a big difference. my advice, write something REALLY unique. that will make them pause for a second and be like, wow. you know? make a lasting impression

I'm applying to Amherst too,but as a foreigner, so my chances are even worse than yours,

1280 SAT
3.3 weighted GPA
30% rank

decent EC's; very good Recs, hopefully a good essay.

Oh yes, and to screw it up a bit more, I'll ask for a financial aid...talk about slim chances...

By Anand_Patel (Anand_Patel) on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 - 10:23 pm: Edit

your grades are incredible compared to mine

By Lynch1000s (Lynch1000s) on Tuesday, November 04, 2003 - 10:03 pm: Edit

I'm assuming you'll get into UMass Amherst with a 2.7 and a 1200 gpa.

I got in with a 2.9 and a 1170, plus I'm Asian. UMass is about 75% caucasian, so they're looking for more ethnic diversity.

As far as northeastern, I'm not sure. I applied there, but I might have missed their deadline.

Good luck
