Oh yeah, I'm a national achievement semi-finalist. I dunno if that helps.
By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Sunday, October 19, 2003 - 11:53 am: Edit
I would say it is very hard to predict chances of getting in sans standardized test scores, especially to the Ivies.
By Princesanegrita (Princesanegrita) on Sunday, October 19, 2003 - 11:56 am: Edit
I'm not really looking for a prediction of whether I will get in or not..obviously because i dont have test scores..I'm more or less looking for *healthy* SAT(I & II) scores to be aiming for. I'd love to have 800s..but what are acceptable scores
By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Sunday, October 19, 2003 - 12:02 pm: Edit
You could be in great standing with a 1400s SAT I and 700+ SAT IIs. I am not sure you should include your affiliations with NAACP, however. Ivies are a bit critical of that particular organization from some of the articles I've read out of Harvard specifically. I think everything else on that list looks great though; they all show real initiative

mid/high 1300 will also work. You have really good EC's, gpa, you're disadvantaged, you're first gen, and you're a minority.

EXCELLENT. You have more hooks than I've ever seen.
Underrepresented Minority
Extensive Research
First-gen college student
Low income
Leadership
You're the kind of person I'd like to meet in college. Congratulations, you're in everywhere.

how does someone have a GPA over 5?

Depending on the outcome of your SAT scores, the vast majority of prestigious schools wouldn't think twice about offering you an acceptance letter with a scholarship! BUT... The determinent is your SAT scores. If it's at least 1200, you will get into some or most of the Ivy and/or other elite institutions that you apply to. Congrats on all your hard work. Keep it up.

Perform decently on the tests and make your circumstances clear to admissions... and you're in. Amazing

with decent SAT scores, you'll get in anywhere you want. for someone with a "severely low income", that is godly work. congratulations.

some schools have wierd gpa systems. Like honors is 1 extra point, AP is more....duh

To have any sort of chance with the Ivies, break 600 on each part of the SAT; ditto for SAT IIs. If you want to be extremely competitive, go for 700s on all. They won't turn you down with solid scores and your background. Sell yourself as someone who will really appreciate and make something out of the education the Ivies can offer you.

That weighted GPA is beautiful.
Makes me teary-eyed just looking at it. It's like a sunrise or a new day at midnight. Because it's not just a 5 -- it's a 5.09.
:^) Cheers, girl.

PrincessN,
The lowest SAT scores for Ivies are 1200. At least that's what Harvard says (and I have heard this directly from their adcoms).
The Ivies will only take students who clearly are capable of doing the work to graduate from an Ivy. That's why 1200 is the lowest score.
Very few people get in with such scores. More than likely they are stellar athletes, offspring of very wealthy donors (such as people who have donated millions to the university) and of celebreties and other prominent people, and people who represent extreme types of diversity such as applicants who are homeless, overcame extreme challenges, have made incredible achievements (i.e. child stars, students who've already published books, etc.), or who are from places such as small towns in N.Dakota, which send few people to places like Harvard.
With your sky high average, IB education, and research and other experience, I predict that your SAT scores will be well above the minimal range for acceptance.
The best predictor of SAT scores is the rigor of the curriculum, and since you're excelling in the most rigorous curriculum in the country, I predict that you'll at least get a 1300 on the SAT.
Instead of fretting about the SAT, I think it would be better to spend your time making sure you're applying to an appropriate group of colleges, and are polishing your essays and getting your recommendations well before the due dates so as to show off you impressive achievements to best advantage.
How did you do on the PSAT? Are you in line for a National Merit or National Achievement scholarship?

I dont think being black SHOULD have anything to do with your admission into college, and if you think it should than you should really look into your morals.

Princesnegrita,
Even if you were white, you'd have a decent shot at Ivies. Your PSAT score indicates that your SATs will be well within Ivy range. Your ECs are impressive, and you have a variety of hooks.
I don't agree with the advice of the person who said not to include your NAACP experience. That seemed to come out of left field to me. I am a Harvard grad, an alumna interviewer, and have never heard anyone there say negative things against the NAACP nor can I think of any reasons why the organization would be disliked by Ivy adcoms. Your having a position of leadership would be, in fact, something that would impress adcoms.
The types of organizations that would keep you out of a place like Harvard would be things indicating an intolerance of other types of people. Examples would be skinhead or KKK membership. I have heard of a student who got rejected from an Ivy because although the student had stellar grades, scores, etc., and also was a URM, the student wrote an essay describing how he hated gays. I heard this from a person who'd been an Ivy adcom.
By Princesanegrita (Princesanegrita) on Friday, October 24, 2003 - 02:03 pm: Edit
I never said my being black should have any bearing on my admissions, but a fact is that it could. And if someone wants to let me in because of my background, I'll be more than willing to share my experiences with other people. BTW..got SAT scores back...1390(740v
650m
).....ok...but can/will do better. Taking it Nov. 1 ..wish me luck!

Your scores are fine as they are. Don't stress over the retake. Concentrate now on your essays and interviews.

it's like personal goal of mine to bust a 1500..
By Esmereldasy (Esmereldasy) on Friday, October 24, 2003 - 03:39 pm: Edit
When are you taking the SAT IIs? Are you going to apply early anywhere? OH, and you should probably send in recomendations from that harvard-graduate mentor and maybe even some of the other leadership organizations you worked for.
Congrats on your SATs! That's wonderful for your first try! Did you study for it? I'm sure you can raise your math score several points if you review with a baron's book (or something else, i donno), just to get yourself working faster and to make sure you know how to do all the problems (in the fastest way possible)
. But you really don't have to raise that score, it's fabulous.
I also think you should keep in the work with the NAACP. Leadership and all that.
You are clearly very talented and ambitious. You're someone i'd like to meet at college.
keep it up.
