Accepted to Princeton:
SATS:
1600
Math IIc: 800
Physics: 800
Writing: 760

I have 4.2 weighted GPA. Unweighted I dont know.
I'm about 3rd in my class

JERSEYGAL...congrats! btw, what do you mean by very personal nontypical essay?
another question: i think i'd get the bets recommendations from 2 of my sophomore teachers (1 history, 1 math)--but would colleges frown upon them being teachers of my sophomore year and not a junior year?
thanks

By jerseygal on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 09:11 pm: Edit

By personal... I mean that I really talked about some very personal things in my life (that I wouldn't post on a public forum). Also, I was just myself. I did not throw in a bunch of pretentious words. I did not talk about academic accomplishments at all. I figured that the essays are a time for the college to get to know me as a person. I figured that my grades and SATs could vouch for my academic merit.

WHAT THE ••••! You're a cheerleader with a 1270 and you got into fuckin yale! This is so unfair how do u get into Yale with a 1270? God damn legacy status probably your daddy went there and he put in a phone call. That •••• is more unfair than affirmative action. Burn in hell

By APAPA on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 02:21 am: Edit

No legacy
No nothing
I wrote good essays, had a 30 ACT and did a lot of research for NIH. that's all.

By APAPA on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 02:26 am: Edit

Didn't even attempt the SAT2 tests. This tells you that they want DIVERSITY, and NUMBERS don't mean ANYTHING. Sorry if I burst your bubble, but I am proof that you don't need to be the Ivy League Stereotype to get in. Haven't even visited Yale yet, but plan to for Xmas. All of the people out there that don't think they can make it, TRY because sometimes fate is on your side. And I didn't spend my life worrying about the TESTS. I had fun. Didn't study for them and didn't care.

By Montreal on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 02:48 am: Edit

Hi... got deffered Harvard
what do u think my chances are for RD?

1360 SATs 710m-650v
lousy SAT II (800, 590, 570)
90 average in a very difficult liberal arts college (quebec system)
applying into religious studies/government
published author
lots of EC (and good ones too)
olympic bound curler
speak 6 languages fluently
canadian
hot, personal, gr8 interview and essay
and a very famous actors grandson

Any suggestions what I could do- besides redoing the SATs II... note: im also applying to Yale.

BTw- they deffered all applicants from montreal they said because they lost our interview transcripts and could not find them in time to make a decision before the deadline... can I do anything about that? It's soooo unfair!

By Set on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 03:00 am: Edit

Hey Montreal, I don't think thats true. Harvard looks at an individual's overall characteristics, and one lousy interview transcript surely doesn't have that big of an impact on acceptance.

By ghast on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 03:19 am: Edit

Hey guys,
I'm forlorn. I was deferred Harvard EA. As far as I'm concerned, that's rejection...

1580 SAT I

College courses, IB program, piano recitals for charity, etc...

By qer on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 03:50 am: Edit

What do you mean you're a published author, Montreal? Any published author is sure to get in.

By Me on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 04:35 am: Edit

APAPA, are you a minority? If so, let me assure you that you wouldn't get in Yale as a white person with a 1270

By KAA on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 05:06 am: Edit

Hey Apapa!!!!

GOT INTO YALE as well!! I am so so happy... Haven't seen it either but am really looking forward to it... cu there.

By Congrats on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 09:11 am: Edit

the people you post their stats that got accepted, could you please be more descriptive, like including class rank, ECs, awards...

thanks and congrats

By APAPA on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 10:22 am: Edit

NO, I am a white girl. No minority. And I had a 30 ACT. It was funny because I took the SAT again and got a 1200. I am not a standarized test taker, but with Organic Chem, and Calc, I have taken it 2 years ago. Class rank 1/361.

Accepted ED to Gallatin at NYU

White Catholic middle-class female from small public HS in MA.

GPA: 3.6/4.0 and 22/179 (APs weighed as honors, not above... my school is so backwards)

APs: US History (11) and English Lit (12) (Bio & Art also offered, but Art was out of the question and Bio.. well, that was out of the question too.)

Tests: SAT I - 1440 (750V/690M); SAT II - 800 Writing, 750 US History, 720 English Lit; AP - 5 on US History; National Merit Commended (218)

Senior Classes: AP English Lit, Shakespeare and His Classical Heritage, American Foreign Policy, Calculus (AP Option, but still not an AP), Music Theory & Composition (Ind. Study), Jazz Ensemble, Band (All but Band worth an honors credit)

ECs
*Drama - Co-President of the Drama council
*Band - second chair alto sax/first chair tenor sax (marching season)
*Jazz Ensemble - second chair alto sax; improv soloist
*Chamber Orchestra - Alto & Tenor Sax and Clarinet; concert tour of California last summer
*Sax Quartet - Alto sax
*Chorus - Soprano; accepted to various music festivals; part of the select mixed chorus
*Host of weekly radio show on local station
*National Honor Society
*Slam poet
*50 hrs of community service, most from starting and teaching a senior citizen computer skills class for two years

Excellent recs. Essay also excellent- I wrote about a very personal connection to a German-language song and how its message has influenced my life.

Congratulations to all ED members of the Class of 2007. :-)

By eif on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 02:33 pm: Edit

forgive this stupid question...
your rank is determined by gpa right?

By Me12345 (Me12345) on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 02:35 pm: Edit

I was accepted to Cornell Engineering school early decision.

SAT's: 1420... 800 math, 620 verbal (I don't think that verbal is all that important to the Engineering schools)

Math 2C: 800
Physics: 760
Writing: 690

My GPA was only about 3.7 but I come from a prestigious public school. And they don't do class ranks.

Although I wasn't a member of 20 different clubs, I was deeply involved in the activities in which I did participate. Here's a list of the main ones.

-I was a member of the Crew (rowing) team grades 10-12 and a co-captain senior year. This is fall and spring crew.
-I was in the band since 5th grade
-School bowling (yes, bowling) team grades 10-12
-CTY Summer program (Center for Talented Youth) for 5 years, I loved it, and if anyone else has been there, they will know what I mean
-National Honors Society member
-I am involved in my synagogue. I am a member of USY (United Synagogue Youth), a jewish youth group.
-I actually did have a job this summer, which is prolly quite rare for ivy league students, since most are stereotypically rich snobs who travel all over England every summer. So if you want an ivy league school, something unique to have on your transcript could be something as simple as a job.
-I also was involved in a good amount of volunteer work (don't ask me the number of hours, I did it out of the goodness of my heart, not for the hours)

Those were the main ones. I did write a 2 page resume listing all the activities I did, but those are the ones I really care about.

My essays were what I would call decent (there are 5 of them, so I definitely ran out of steam after a while) I don't think that engineering schools care all that much about the essays anyways.

Congrats to all other ED acceptances, and I hope that your first choice schools are what you make them out to be. And to regular decision applicants or soon-to-be applicants, I hope I helped giving you an idea of what kind of standars colleges have. Peace.

Got into Georgetown SFS.
Read about my stats under my other post South Carolinian for Gtown SFS EA.
I waited all day and the mail was 5 hours late, so I was stressing, and then I went out for like the 15th time and there was a thin envelope, which I could tell had more than one sheet in it, and so I was accepted. I still can't believe it!

By Sar (Sar) on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 06:44 pm: Edit

Normal, like I said, you must be clairvoyant... please tell me more confidently that I'll get in RD. ;)
And it was CU ED. I think Harvard is the only Ivy that does EA.

I'm going to see if I can shove my Chorus and Robotics involvements a little higher in status. Didn't even put it in part 2 because I thought they'd notice them in my transcript. Don't know if that's it, but it's worth a try, I think.
Meanwhile, I'm applying to maybe 3 combined degree programs hehehe. Prepare to hear more from me about my bad heart condition...

Congrats to everyone else who got into somewhere ED/EA! ^_^

By possible explanation on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 02:22 pm: Edit

My theory with sungwon is that Harvard is just playing the admissions game the best they can. Since she was deferred, she will apply to other ivy league schools that will in all probability accept her. Therefore, when Harvard accepts her in the spring and she enrolls there (assuming that is where she wants to go), it will give the other schools a lower enroll rate. Maybe it is a small fraction of a percent, but if Harvard does it enough then they can boost their own selectivity/enroll rate in this manner by some degree. So, sungwon, if I am right, I would not get your hopes down too much.

By Fumi on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 03:32 pm: Edit

I just got deferred from my dream school, georgetown college. I'm so bummed...
Hearing about other people's stats really makes me wonder if I have a chance anywhere else. Like Sungwon, wow, if you got deferred from Harvard, I have no chance at all! At any rate, my info:
Japanese female (living here for 12 years now)

1360 SATI (math 720, verbal 640)

800 Japanese, 780 math I, 740 math II, 710 writing

29 ACT (should I send this score to colleges? I know it's not that great)

3.9 GPA, 4.7 weighted

981 hrs of community service at local nursery school

community service this past summer in the philippines

co-president of amnesty international, vice president of poetry club, model UN, and more

4 APs last year, 3 this year (scores were 5, 4, 4, and 3)

I also got deferred from Harvard. Do you guys think I have a chance at Hopkins, U of Maryland, Columbia, and Georgetown RD? I would be greatful for any comments and advice. Thanks!

Deferred from Harvard (i.e. rejected):

1550 SAT, 35 ACT, 790/760/740 SAT IIs (IIC, Writ., Phy.)
4.0/4.0, about 20th/350 (because of move, was #1 before)
Played varsity basketball, varsity football, track, math team, science team, philosohy club, etc.
Lots of awards, including ARML participant, Science Olympiad award winner, National Merit Semi-finalist, National German Exam medal, etc.
Will have 8 APs after this year
White male

- but -

A friend of mine WAS accepted to Harvard.

Had significantly lower scores than me in every area, not nearly as many awards, never played any sports, although he had a lot more community service kind of stuff. Also a white male. AND (most importantly), a legacy (which seems to be QUITE important).

Deferrals

Are they as bad as I think? My reasoning was that if the university knew I would be good enough to get in under Regular Decision, then they would have accepted me. In other words, being deferred, the only way I will get in is if they have an unusually weak Regular Decision pool. Am I misunderstanding the process? Please clarify if you have further information.

I got into Princeton on Friday.

My stats:
1530 SAT I (770V, 760M), 800 writing, 750 math IIC, 770 French

4.231 GPA (weighted)
I'm #1/#2 in my class (it's coming down to the final grades at the end of the year)
My school is an all-girls, Catholic prep school right outside of DC.

APs- European History, US History, French Language
this year- Chemistry, Calc BC, English Lit, French Lit

ECs- editor in chief of our literary magazine, ukrainian school, piano, varsity track, sailing, NHS

Community Service- tutoring and homeshopping for the elderly

Summer- internship at the National Institutes of Health last summer, sailing instructor for the past 3 years

My teacher and counselor recs were excellent, I think. I know my counselor put a lot of time into hers. I think I did a good job with the required essays. They were personal in the sense that I don't think anyone else could have written the exact same thing. I also wrote an essay for the optional page, "do you have anything else to tell us," and I met with a Molecular Biology professor and the sailing captain. I really want to be on the sailing club team next year.

I'm sorry if my ethnic name sounds ambiguous, but Sungwon is a Korean male name. :)

As to there being any mistake in my deferral, there was none. My application file was complete and on time. I can't really speculate as to why I didn't get in but I am not completely disheartened because I believe I will get in somewhere good.

I don't think I "f'ed-up" in any way on my application...unless you count being born Korean-American. In any case, I will try to be gracious here and congratulate all those ED/EA applicants who were successful. I wish you the best of luck ladies and gents!

EC's: I started the Model Congress Club in my school, and I did it just for the sake of my application, but I have spent hours on the field training for lacrosse- Good Luck to everyone!

By bub on Monday, December 16, 2002 - 03:56 pm: Edit

harvard only rejects 3% of its EA applicants, so virtually everyone who doesn't get in is deferred.

By pizzaluvr on Monday, December 16, 2002 - 04:50 pm: Edit

sungwon, if u leave it blank, they absolutely have no grounds to include u in the whole AA game... you could be white and named Sungwon, or black, for all they know, even if it SEEMS obvious. The point is, they CAN't KNOW FOR SURE unless you indicate it yourself.
By marking yourself as Asian, you're basically drawing your own bullseye.
They can't assume. My white friend is named Meili Chan. She's also adopted. For your other app's, maybe leave it blank. And good luck.

Hi, my name is Anish. I am currently in the 10th grade. I am a mediocre student, especially compared to all of these other stats that i Have read of. I would just like to know whether I still have a chance to make it to an IVY league college if I start getting my act together. Here are my current stats:

SAT I (9th Grade Score): 490V470M
I took 2 Honors classes in 9th Grade.
I am currently taking 1 AP course in History and 1 honors course.
GPA: 4.17/5.0 = 83% (Final GPA in 9th Grade)

I am interested in majoring in Business Management/Administration.

I am in a University Program for International Studies and Business in my high school where we have learnt about Global Policies and currently Global Health Issues. In the next 2 years, I will be taking International Law & Rights, Accounting, Business Management, Global Marketing, and Economics. All of these courses will be AP.

Courseload sounds to be good.

GPA is pretty low, but if you improve it drastically they will see the improvement, and your GPA will be better. Stanford recalcs GPA without freshman year, so you have a chance to fully redeem yourself there.

SAT is very low, even for 9th grade. You're going to need to work on that. You're going to want at least ~1400-1500 to be competitive (not to say lower doesn't get in)...

Stay involved in the activities you have a passion for and show great commitment (i.e. Tae Kwon Do). Find community service that interests you and stick with it.

As for awards, honor roll isn't going to cut it, sorry (don't put it on your applicaton or they'll know you've been scrounging for awards). Get more awards :) if you can.

would a 4.5/5.o b suitable

By ff on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 10:04 pm: Edit

I don't know the 5.0 system, but if a 4.5/5.0 is like a 3.5/4.0, then you aren't going to be a very competitive applicant. The mean GPA for the most prestigious schools is about 3.9/4.0.

Really work on getting those grades up. Here are some suggestions. In the classes you think you'll get a B in (and god forbid a C) talk to your teachers. Ask them what you need to do to improve your work/test scores. Employ their help on what you don't understand. If they don't help you learn, they aren't doing their job. Do essays for classes early and ask teachers to critique your first draft. It may seem kind of awkward to get help, especially when you are such a bright student, but don't let that turn you off. Who knows, you may get to know a teacher really well, turn your B into an A, and get an excellent reccommender to boot!

Other stuff, but those were the important ones.

I also submitted a CD of my violin playing, it may have helped "separate" me from the thousands of other applicants.

I'm URM and first generation college student, which probably helped my acceptance status.

But let me say one more thing. I worked my @ss off, and I think I earned it. Just because I'm black doesn't mean I've automatically undercut myself in hopes to take advantage of affirmative action.
As far as I'm concerned, AA can kiss my black ass!
I worked to my full potential, and I succeeded!
Best of luck to everyone else out there.

And does anyone have any advice on what to do after a deferral?

just wait for spring, and start mobilizing for safeties/other options. go for your local university, get some scholarships there... and if that's the place you eventually end up in, hey, it's no big deal... undergrad means virtually nothing in the grand scheme of things.
but with stats as superior as yours, i wouldn't worry about that. go for rice, cornell, brown, duke, etc. im sure you'll get into one. no harvard isn't the end of the world.

That's true and besides you don't have to declare your ethnicity. There is no law coercing you to do so. You can always list other. Even if you do have an Asian last name like me for example (Zhang), who's to say that you are Asian? What are they going to do? Accuse you? The thing is many colleges even lie about their Asian student population numbers especially the Ivy leagues and schools on par with them. For example, Columbia claims to have a 13% Asian student pop. That is pure BS considering that there are over 800 Chinese students there alone excluding all other Asians and considering that CU is not that big with maybe close to 6000 students, the math simply doesn't add up to their little fib. Same with Stanford. They claim only a 25% Asian student pop yet when I visited, it was nearly as many as some of the UC's. Guess these schools don't want to be overrun by Asians

Sungwon,
Seriously, I think you can get into a whole truckload of better colleges than Michigan. No offence to Michigan, of course, its just that I think you deserve better. Someone posted that Stanford rejects 16% of its 1600 SATI applicants. Well, to him I say what's the percentage for 1600 SATI, PLUS 800 for SEVEN subjects in SATII, AND Baseball and Tennis CAPTAINS? Honestly, it's Harvard's loss.

Anthony,
At my public high school in NJ, a 1560 Asian female got into Princeton. She got 800 and 5's on all of her SAT II/AP's though. No sports, founded GSA, won some physics state awards. She also takes a freshmen physics class at PU.

Statsgirl,

That's cool, good for that girl. I kinda feel bad since I worked my butt off to only get deferred. Hopefully I can still get in as it's only a deferral or else I can still get into Stanford, MIT, Columbia, or Harvard whom are just as hard as Princeton sad to say.

By haha on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 01:58 am: Edit

there's a difference btwn EA and ED, jerk. do your research.
EA- binding
ED- non-binding

Most common example: Apply Harvard/MIT ED, another Ivy EA

indiachik's case, GTown EA other places ED.

it's FINE

it only becomes a problem if indiachik refuses to withdraw her other applications and ends up attending a school diff. from GTown

By indiachik on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 07:00 am: Edit

actually ED is binding and EA is nonbinding. You guys need to really know your •••• before you start pounding me about it. I am goin to amherst next year

Hi . . . I got into Brown ED!

STATS: 1410 SAT I (730 v, 680 m); SAT IIs -- 800, Writing; 770, Lit; 720, US History
APS: US History, Spanish Language -- both 5s

I'm a white female, and I go to one of the two competitive college preparatory highschools in Colorado. Class size is 100, but we don't rank. This year I'm taking AP English, AP Spanish Lit, AP European History, Advanced Environmental Biology and Calculus, with a GPA of 3.9 overall. But my grades and scores weren't what got me in . . .

ECs: Lead in the school play junior and senior year; Captain of the Speech and Debate team (2nd in State in dramatic interp); Captain of the varsity track and cross-country teams; Class of '03 representative to the Board of Trustees; mock trial; TONS of community service -- I founded a trip where a group of kids goes down to the Dominican Republic host a summer camp and build houses for a village

Personal, atypical essay (I think that's what got me in), and glowing recs.

My twin sister got into Dartmouth ED with similar stats (except that she also had the edge of a double legacy). Good luck to all RD applicants!

I am just a Junior, but trying to figure out where to start looking at colleges. Got my first SAT back, 800M, 570V. Hope to improve that but math is definitely my strength. I took Calc BC as a 9th grader and got a 5. Since then been taking university upper division math with 4.0 so far. High school stuff 4.0 gpa, 1/515 class rank, lots of AP's and honors, pretty good EC's. What schools are more likely to overlook a weaker verbal score, if it doesn't improve. Looking to major in some sort of engineering. Thanks for the help!

For both Rachael and coolcat...Tisch primarily looks for creativity before anything else. I, however had to audition in front of the artistic director...for dramatc writing, I think that oyur writing sample is DEFINITELy the most important part of your application, so write brilliantly, and then comes your extra curricular activities...however, because you want to go ointo writing, I think IT IS A MUST that your bring up your verbal, and have really solid english grades.... Rachael- SHOW YOUR PASSIOn in your application..make sure to note certain film-orienteed activities or samples that you have...they are most concerned with what your applying for, not SAT's, etc. best of luck, and if you are accepted ( I was accpeted ED) see you in the fall in NYC!!
