By Gigglz (Gigglz) on Monday, October 06, 2003 - 05:10 pm: Edit

Does anyone know how the recent UC budget cuts will be affecting a nonresident's chance of getting into UC? Particularly, one who will be establishing residency there soon after, with a high family income, and good qualifications?? But in general would be fine too. thanks!

How are u gonna establish residency there?.....are your parents gonna move?

Otherwise its gonna affect the same way as it will for instate students......less spaces availabe.....more competition.

The ucs are so stupid......they should enroll more out of state students to earn that extra money...........just as u michigan and u of virginia does

I believe that the UC's have a minimum residency requirement --- perhaps a year? Check it out at www.ucop.edu which will also tell you the requirements for being considered as an out of state applicant.

wow you ever heard of UC merced. It's the first research school of the millenium, at least that's what the website says.

No.....ucs do have a minimum residency requirement but along with a year you have to be financially independent......which i believe neither of us are going to be.............So unless your parent( whom ur dependant on)......move to cali, establishing residency is not too realistic

i dont think you guys are listening to me..i know the residency requirements..i'm just staying...i'm a nonresident now, and of course i will be for a year or so..but until then, me being a nonresident w/ good family income.....what are my chances of getting into a UC for now? i was just letting you guys know that my parents are moving there with me *Eventually*....but i guess this is the main question i want answered then..

Im an instate so i disagree with the whole admission of out of state kids. My parents tax money helps pay for the universities--which is something out of state applicants cannot say. Also, theyre a lot more expensive to fund than say a U Mich or U Virginia, which means a larger portion of tax money goes into facilitating the universities. Thus, the UC schools are designed for in state kids, the out of state applicants are only those gifted enough to contribute something to the universities.

Anyways, there wont be much effect on admissions for the UCs. The one negative is that the growth of applicants admitted will stop, meaning the cap is the number of applicants admitted last year. This means that you have the same odds as you did last year unless the number of applicants dramatically increases--which it shouldnt do. If you can get into UC berkeley or UCLA out of state you can get into a private on par (if not better) than those two schools with much better living conditions for the same amount of money. Its just a thought.

my family is moving to cali also..[my dad will be retiring from the military this year, as i simultaneously graduate..we're all moving down there as a family, our entire extended family derives from there]..my brother, who graduated from my IL high school in 2002, already established residency in tracy. it will not be just me moving.
