College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: October 2003 Archive: Chances at Stanford?
By Trombonist (Trombonist) on Sunday, October 05, 2003 - 10:05 pm: Edit

I'm hoping to get into Stanford mostly, although I've applied to a few other schools
1500 SAT 1: (780m 720v)
Sat II: 760 chem, 770 math, 720 writing

All of the following stats are from 10-12 grade only, since I know they throw out the freshman year:

4.0 GPA
I don't know my rank out of the class, and I didn't have a 4.0 freshman year so I probably wouldn't be at the very top
I took the hardest possible classes and all AP classes I could, including being placed in advanced math.

Extra Curriculars-
I plat trombone and got into the highest possible concert band and jazz band my sophmore year, which is the earliest you can make it, and I got jazz student of the year junior year.
I also received music student of the quarter for concert band
I did pep band/marching band all three years
I've played in community theater musicals each year, I wasn't paid, so it was volunteer work.
I was student of the month twice, and student of the quarter once
I've also had high marks at solo and ensemble contests
I was in science olympiads all three years, and I went to state all sophmore and junior year, and I expect to again this year. In sophmore and junior year I placed in the top three each time in different events

I am in soccer and skiing, not with the school. I did varsity track and field with the school all years and placed in either or both the league championships and district championships each year, my junior year in two events. I have also placed in skiing races.
I'm in the national honor roll
I am/was:
Treasurer and VP of the NSAA (government and politics club, basically)
President of the environmental club
VP of the Key Club
Secretary of the Natural High Club (Anti-drug)

I was a "panther pal" for all three years, which is where high school students are paired up with elementary school students and attend organized events together.
My community service includes 45 hours as a teahcer assistant for my old elementary school teacher
40 hours at a soup kitchen
Habitat for Humanity Volunteer
50+ hours of various other community service

What do you think my chances are?
(My high school has a population of about 3000, my class is 700, and all sports and competitions were 4A) It's also a small-town school, will that help any?

Maybe you'd like to apply to Harvard?

It's almost impossible to predict for a college like Stanford, but you certainly have a good chance. Make sure you send in an audition tape for your trombone playing, and I wouldn't really mention the "student of the month/quarter" awards on your application, since they seem rather vague.

Why do you suggest Harvard? I actually did apply there too, but Stanford is more specialized in the field I want to go into.

Mike07, How do you like Stanford? What do you see as strengths, weaknesses?

Yeah, I suppose I'll send in a tape. I might even try for a marching band scholarship or something. Thanks for the thought

Your chances look pretty good. I'm not sure if they have music scholarships, but your music might help a bit anyways.
