Does anyone know how to use Adobe Acrobat to type on PDF applications that couldn't otherwise be written on?

Yeah, create textboxes in the areas you want to type.

You can move the text box and change the size of it by moving your cursor over the text field and clicking and dragging out one side of the box. Or you can delete the text box and add your own. So you should be able to make the words line up however and wherever you want them to on the line of the application.
As for previewing before you print, go to Tools, Basic and click on the hand. The text boxes will disappear and what you see is what will be printed out.

ok the admissions officers know whether or not their app is editable and i'm sure if they wanted to make it editable, they would have figured out how. Just do it how they wanted to do it. If you have bad handwriting try printing the letters slowly. I would be insulted if someone acrobated a paper i specifically made uneditable.

"I would be insulted if someone acrobated a paper i specifically made uneditable."
Would you be insulted if they typed? What's the difference? In the pre-computer era all colleges expected apps to be typed. I think you are assuming more technical savvy and conscious thought than probably applies.

Well I didn't mean i wanted to edit the text boxes that they have because the app i have has no text boxes. I just wanted to know how to make your own textboxes better. Thanks tho

I think the colleges that didn't make their applications editable did so because they didn't want to spend the time or money doing it. I have a hard time believing that any college would have cared enough to make their application specifically uneditable. What purpose would that serve?

For example, the if you're applying online to Yale, if you print out the recommendation forms etc., you'll find that you're information is already typed into the PDF file. Very time saving and convenient. If they're editing their own apps, then im sure you can download the pdf and edit it yourself...stop makin such a big deal about how to fill in apps. You could handwrite it, or you could spend time to type it.
I really dont think it will make much of a difference either way to the adcom. They dont sit and carefully examine every minute detail of your app. They read them quickly because they have thousands more to do.

"or you could spend time to type it"
This isn't an issue of time. It's that few people own a typewriter anymore.
