College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: October 2003 Archive: NYU Admission Difficulty Decreased?
By I1lmatics (I1lmatics) on Sunday, October 05, 2003 - 02:16 pm: Edit

Off the 2004 us news rankings, it states that the sat range is now 1210-1410 making a 1310 the avg.. didn't it used to be something like a 1340 a year ago? It also claims the 2002 acceptence rate was 33%... i though it used to be near 25%?

Is the usnews wrong or has NYU admission became slightly easier?

By Heatgirl17 (Heatgirl17) on Sunday, October 05, 2003 - 03:17 pm: Edit

actually usnews is totally wrong. an nyu rep came to my school n he said the mid 50% range for cas is 1300-1450 so usnews is so off.

By I1lmatics (I1lmatics) on Sunday, October 05, 2003 - 04:09 pm: Edit

no but usnews really cant be wrong since the stats they recieve are self reported by the schools themselves.. if anyhing the rep was wrong

NYU is definitely slacking... In my school (A magnet school) out of 300 students, ready? 43, YES FORTY-THREE STUDENTS were accepted... that's crazy...

ok if the middle 50 is 1210-1410 that does NOT mean the average is 1310. The average can be anywhere from 1211 to 1409. That's the median which differs from the mean.

A few years ago, NYU hit an all time high in the number of applications and accepted only 29% of their applicants.
Then 9/11 hit and I understand the application numbers have gone down.
However, NYU is such a split up school, There are 7 colleges within NYU. The numbers can vary widely from each college. It really is wise to get the actual numbers from the school for, say, CAS or Stern or Gallatin. Tisch and Steinhardt are heavily dependent on auditions so again the numbers can fluctuate.
My son's school says that they called NYU and confirmed the new US News numbers. Someone asked that question at a parents' college discussion group. But those numbers are for NYU overall.

This month's Atlantic monthly has a list of the 50 most selective colleges in the U.S. NYU is number 39 on the list which includes schools like Harvard, Yale, etc. In 2002, NYU accepted 28% of applicants. Thirty eight percent of ED applicants were accepted. Females have a slight admissions advantage at NYU - 29% of females were admitted compared to 27% of males. The 25th percentile SAT averagewas 1250, the 75th percentile average was 1430. 70% of accepted students were in the top 10% of their class.

I'd say NYU is NOT getting easier to get into, only harder.

As Jamimom said, the admit rates vary MAJORLY within the NYU schools. The average SAT rate for Stern isleagues above the others, so reading NYU just by numbers is quite difficult. I've also found that schools' reported numbers are ALWAYS above USNews numbers... I just take a grain of salt with all the info I get.
Oh, and I heard (though I don't know if it is true) that apps to both NYU and Columbia shot UP after 9-11, so who knows?!

Yeah but Carolyn, why then the disparity between atlantic monthly and us news? The stats you mentioned seemed similar to the stats us news released in their 2003 edition

Girl:

Statistically, yes, it is true that applications to both NYU and Columbia has shot up considerably. NYU, since 2001, has received the highest number of applications out of all the private universities in the nation. Admissions at Columbia and NYU is a bit harder than before, no question about that.

SAME POST EVERY SINGLE WEEK

This site has a message board for individual schools which has the US World Top 25. If you click onto NYU, you'll see a wealth of current stats and info on NYU. Particularly on CAS. It appears that NYU is getting harder to get into, though there is a mention of a slight dip in stats for a year. Not that it matters now. The way the aps have been rolling in, it looks like a banner year for NYU in the admissions department.
