I go to a middle-classed, mainly white, wannabe good high school.

I think it is ranked top ten suburban public school in PA, or was it central PA, oh well doesn't matter (which isn't very good either case.)

During the years 2000-2002, the 3 senior classes were like this:

in the top 5% of the class the average SAT was around 1480.
The top 10% around 1420.
Top 15% around 1350.
Top 35% around 1250.

School average: 1150-1200

I jusr thought that this was interesting.

we have 42 National Merit Semi Finalists

By Valpal (Valpal) on Sunday, October 05, 2003 - 10:18 pm: Edit

It's worst than I ever imagined at my D's school. I just asked the guidance office for a school profile. I couldn't believe my eyes: Senior class average SAT for 2002/2003 was 901! That's 119 pts below the national average. No wonder so many of her peers think my D's brilliant...clipart{roll}

By The_Slc_Bug (The_Slc_Bug) on Sunday, October 05, 2003 - 10:39 pm: Edit

Perhaps many of your daughter's peers haven't had a wonderful economic/domestic background, and simply haven't been able to rise above their situations. I don't think it is appropriate to "roll your eyes" at that. There is not much room for inherent intelligence on the SAT. If you don't have the background, you're screwed.

Like BlueB, I'm at a 'wanna-be-good' high school. Our school reports average ACT (25- quite blagh, lots of legacy students in our school), though I know out of a class of 250ish, we had 12 NM semi finalists and 25 NM commended.

Actually Slc Bug, the majority of students in my D's school are from moderately middle class to working class families. Many are the sons and daughters of military enlisted personel (we have a major Air Force Base, an Army Post, and several Naval Facilities within close proximity). Only a small percentage---I'd estimate well under 20 percent could be labeled, "poor". In fact, I have been mystified by the SAT scores of two or three of the students in the top ten of her class. The 3rd ranked student, for instance, has an SAT score of 950. But instead of being concerned about that, she has opted to simply apply to a 3rd tier state school (last year, she said she wanted to go to Duke). She has often shown a pattern of giving up too easily. In any case, scores above 1200 are pretty rare at our school.

By The_Slc_Bug (The_Slc_Bug) on Monday, October 06, 2003 - 12:56 am: Edit

Well, it can also be linked to the school system, especially pre-high school. Do you know anything about that?

By Calidan (Calidan) on Monday, October 06, 2003 - 02:35 am: Edit

1200, pretty good public in northern cali

By Xtech (Xtech) on Monday, October 06, 2003 - 01:24 pm: Edit

I really doubt any of you are getting the right stats if your average at a public is around 1200, you really have to remember to factor in all those tards who don't give a •••• about their education. My school is ranked in the top 20 publics in NJ and we only have a 1080 average. And NJ puts out higher average SAT scores than most other states, just look at our PSAT's SemiFinalist cutoffs, they were the highest in the nation.

california prep school class of 2003 average: 1348

By Justinfiddler (Justinfiddler) on Monday, October 06, 2003 - 04:13 pm: Edit

my school is probably 1000 -1100.

i agree that your financial background affects your sat scores. a couple people in my school get 1500's but their parents are doctors and lawyers. they can afford all the classes and can take the test as many times as they want.

By Boatboat (Boatboat) on Tuesday, October 07, 2003 - 02:31 am: Edit

1260

By Freak4korn72 (Freak4korn72) on Tuesday, October 07, 2003 - 07:03 am: Edit

I think last year there were only a handfull of people that broke 1400, 1300, and 1200. I believe someone might have got a 1510 but its doubtful. I know most people in my class think they cant get a 1220 like I did :-\
