Discus: What Are My Chances?: September 2003 Archive: Interesting extracirriculars
By Dudeoflife1 (Dudeoflife1) on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 07:14 pm: Edit

im planning on applying ED to columbia and i was wondering what others think about my chances...

my class rank is somewhere around the top 5% (my school refuses to tell us specifics),
3.7 gpa unweighted)
1510 sat,
800 chem,
800 math IIc,
700 writing
five 5s on AP tests
and of the most challenging course load my school offers. (class size 600+)

it may seem irrelevant, but i heard columbia likes foriegn languages - i took academic Spanish for 3 years and got crappy grades throughout

Although nothing in this record that will look amazing to an ivy, i have a few extracirriculars that i hope will help:

volunteer firefighter for 3 years, Lieutenant Cadet
top 5 in a national science fair competition in 8th grade (discovery young scientists challenge)(i havent done any other research since then)
New Jersey governors school of science (over the summer)
guitar club, 4 years
Columbia Science Honors program

I have a few other standard extracirriculars (some jv sports, Vice President of some club, CTY)
