Discus: What Are My Chances?: September 2003 Archive: Stanford EA chances?
By Acdbx (Acdbx) on Monday, September 22, 2003 - 07:00 pm: Edit

I'm a senior in a decently competitive HS right now, and was wondering how my chances would be at Stanford EA, or CalTech/Harvey Mudd normal decision, also the UC system.

IMO, my ECs are on the weak side, but would my grades/scores overcome that? I'll be able to get 2 great recs and 2 very good ones(econ, piano, math, counselor), and I'm a good(not quite wonderful) writer.

I'm a CA resident, and my uncle(mom's cousin) got an MS and PhD at Stanford, if that changes anything.

How are you gonna submit 4. i thought they only accept 2 plus an optional one

By Brianp (Brianp) on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 02:23 am: Edit

I think Stanford will reject you. The problem you got is that although you're near perfect, they have thousands of applicants that are just like you (I'm one of them). Stanford rejected 60% of 1600 SAT applicants last year. You are not a URM or a legacy (mom's cousin is pretty remote relation, not a real uncle). But I'm sure you already knew that.

Maybe Robin Mamlet will think differently. Hey, how about applying regular!?

"Stanford rejected 60% of 1600 SAT applicants last year."

Would you please provide some evidence?

I think Caltech will accept you and Harvey Mudd will be a safety. All the UC's are safeties if you live in California, for you. Stanford will be a match.

Sure, Amylase. An admissions officer said that when I visited Stanford last April. If they wanted to, they could probably fill their entire student body with 1600s.

no they couldn't. there are not enough people in the country for them to accept. And many if not most people who get into stanford and harvard would pick the latter.

I think you have a pretty good shot at Stanford but you don't really have a persona. The AIM and AMC are great, but none of your ECs stand out and they are scattered in different areas. Stanford will see you more as a pure academic, which may get you in, but it may not. I think you have a decent shot.

Do I get a negative standing by being an Asian male?

By 4 letters of rec, I mean the 2 academic teachers, the counselor, and the optional one(which, for me would help).

Cmaher, you think CalTech would accept me? Your answer seemed affirmative[as if there was no doubt].. even though I don't have math/sci ECs or research?

I'm still deciding whether to apply to CalTech; I'm not sure I'd want to go there[only 1000 undergrad?]..

Thanks Alimshk, that's pretty much what I've been thinking; but I had no idea how that will affect me wrt Stanford.
