I have a 3.8 GPA (UW) and 1540 sat's (800m, 740v). I took math classes too advanced, calc BC in 10th, and got B's in them. I have good extracurriculars and very good other test scores. My course load has been hard too. Do I still have a shot at schools like MIT and CalTech?

O yeh ur GPA is just terrible, ur not going anyway...just relax, ok? Yes I am sure you do have a fine shot at those schools and if you don't get in then trust me the world is not going to end. College isn't everything.

3.8 uw isnt poor. those were hard classes and a 3.8 shows u worked hard in them.

I am not sure you have a shot (those B's are in math), but only supernerds or geniuses go to MIT of CalTech anyways, you shouldnt expect to get in even if you got an A in all those classes that you got B's in. It's not the end of the world, man, you can still get into any UC school you want or probably get into Harvey Mudd or Carnegie Mellon or U of IC.. or any other good CS or science heavy schools.

Just how good is Carnegie Mellon? Is it a very selective college?

Yes, it is, not on the same level as MIT or Caltech though.
