College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: June 2003 Archive: ED Chances at Bowdoin, Brown, Amherst, Wellesley, Harvard
By Smiley (Smiley) on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 11:08 am: Edit

Hi! I'm going into my senior year (wow, that's scary!). As I start to think more seriously about college admissions, I'm just wondering whether anyone would be kind enough to let me know how you assess my chances and what recommendations you have.

I am hoping to apply ED to Bowdoin, Brown, Amherst, Wellesley, or Harvard (EA).

Background: white Jewish girl

Academics:
Small private day school
4.07 GPA
5 AP tests taken thusfar
Taken hardest courseload at my school
School doesn't rank

Standardized tests:
SAT I--V: 800, M: 680 (first try, not going to retake)
SAT IIs--Math IIC: 740, Writing: 790, Lit/Bio: took in June, hoping for 700+

Extracurriculars:
*Soccer team (JV)
*Track team (V)
*School Newspaper (one of the creators of my
school newspaper, editor)
*Writing for local city paper
*Student council (soph/junior)

*My greatest passion is for service, and I probably have about a thousand hours (never counted...never really cared about hours....just done what I love :-))
-about 25 hr/week volunteer interships at
speical ed preschools summers after soph and
junior year (possible carear) for most of
each summer
-social service committee (chair senior year)
-volunteering after school at afterschool
program (6-10 hrs/week in winter)
-volunteering in public schools during free
period (not as much as I'd like)
-volunteered at summer camps for many years
-coordinated Habitat and other projects
-peer tutoring through AOL (3 hrs/week)
-created large fundraiser that will continue
annually

Essays: should be very strong.... probably will write one about my experiences during the summer with the autistic kids and my dream to find the best possible treatment for autism and then to open a non-profit school for kids with autism...

Recommendations: I'm hoping they'll be really good...

Thank you so much!!

Unlikely: Amherst, Harvard

Likely: Bowdoin, Wellesley, Brown

i really dont think you should apply ED anywhere. If you are having difficulty choosing between Brown and Bowdoin, then maybe your interests and preferences are just too broad right now. Those schools are just too different. There's nothing wrong with not applying early anywhere. Yes, it does increase your chances, but you need to be absolutely in love with the school you choose.

She's 'unlikely' for Harvard, yeah, but looking at her schedule (which may be a bit weak on academics, but it's the best she can do, which is more important), she's just about as unlikely as any other qualified candidate applying to Harvard save, say, Peter Wiggin. You might want to take the SAT again to bring up math (especially if you did that well on the IIc) and ECs are just a touch weak, but based on my unqualified opinion (mostly from what I've seen the last month on here), you look fairly good for Harvard (or at least Amherst) to me.
