Okay here's the deal..Unlike most people on this board, I am not a genius.
Some people gave me wrong advice..and told me too take only one AP class because they said quality is better than quantity. Like if you made A's in honors classes and B's in AP--the honor classes looked better--apparently they were wrong!! My counselor didn't help me either ..so my Junior year..I have only one AP class (Environmental Science) 2 honors classes (US History) and English..Pre-Cal(regular but still weighted)..I am also only in Latin 2..because when i moved to my high school as a freshmen they said all of the foreign languages were filled up. My year grades are going to be all A's and One B in envi sci (92.4..grrr!) However next year I am taking 4 APS (calculas, european History, english and human geo) and Latin 3 and advanced Human Anatomy. Will Colleges think I have challenged myself..even with the classes I took as a Junior? I am currently ranked 15 out of 486 kids..i am hoping to get a 1220-1350 on my SAT..I have volunteered at the library for about 100 hours..I interned at the hospital in Anesthesia...I am on Student council senate--hopefully next year too. I am in several clubs..but no leadership positions..I tutored my neighbor..I am in national honor society..and national latin honor society..and am a junior marshall.. My weighted GPA is 4.4 and my unweighted is a 3.875--but more than likely it has gone up b/c this year i have basically made straight A's throughout the year. I live in North Carolina..what are my chances at UNC CHAPEL HILL or a scholarship at like Public University..not as selective as Chapel Hill? Thanks so much!!
PS. I am so sorry for the long post!!!

you qualify for scholarships at UNC-Charlotte. Eh, it's hard to tell about getting into UNC-CH though. you are a girl from NC, so you are at an advantage. they want you to take the hardest courses offered in high school. SAT scores matter too. same with recommendations. eh, just do well and apply EA this fall. take care and i hope ya get in here!

First off, find whoever told you to take the easier classes and give them a good old-fashioned slap for me.

Seriously, I do think it's ridiculously easier for an in-state student to get into UNC-CH than anybody else. Though the out-of-staters generally need about a 1300 or so (I'm estimating, I'm an NC resident myself), I've known plenty of people who got in with much lower than that- and remember, the 25th percentile for *all* students is 1150, which should say something. So in short, don't worry about that; just make what you're planning to and you'll probably be fine.

Class rank and GPA look good, as does volunteering; ECs are decent enough, if not standout. The one thing that could (and will) hurt you is, as you mentioned, the weak schedule. Even worse is the fact that APES isn't considered to be one of the harder APs (which I know from personal experience as well); on the other hand, it all also depends on how many APs your school offers. If it gives the whole lineup save for one or two, that would look a lot worse for you than if your school only taught, say, four or five.

I guess- just make sure to take a fairly challenging schedule senior year (though that won't be as critical as doing it this year would have been), and like UCLM said, just do good with reccomendations, etc. Based on my completely unqualified opinion, I'd say you have at least a decent to good chance of getting in. Good luck!
