College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: June 2003 Archive: Chances at UNC ?
By Patsmom (Patsmom) on Saturday, June 07, 2003 - 08:21 pm: Edit

My son's stats are 1420 SAT (710/710), SAT IIs are 690 Writing, 700 Math 1C, 720 US History, GPA 4.2 weighted, 2 APs in junior year and will take 2-3 more next year, other courses were mostly honors. He's a National Hispanic Scholar and will likely be a National Merit Semifinalist come September because of his 225 selection index. His ECs are track, cross country, NHS treasurer, tutoring, hospital volunteer, Key Club, Frankin Society & Art Club.
Does he have a chance as an out-of-state student at Carolina?
He's also interested in Emory and UVa. Duke is a huge reach but he wants to give it a shot. His safety is University of Florida, where he'll likely win a full ride as a National Merit Finalist.
Is there anything he can do at this point (entering senior year) to increase his chances at the other schools?

IDK if this helps but I am pretty much applying to the same schools with these stats: 1500 SAT I, rank: 7/184 from NJ, 3 AP's Junior year, and 4 Senior Year, all honors classes, 209 PSAT, Tennis, Bowling, some volunteering and clubs, and white. Is he interested in business?

My advice is to try to boost the SAT I score, and maybe take the ACT if he can't. Other than that, good stats.

He did retake the SAT I today and will take it again in October, probably. He has also taken the ACT (got a 31) and will retake that in senior year as well. His class rank as of last semester was just at the borderline of top 5% (12/233)and I don't expect it to change much now that he has gotten his 2nd semester grades.
He's interested in architecture and plans to take an introductory course for high school students at University of Miami this summer in order to gauge his interest in the field as a career. We want him to find out what the major will be like before he commits to it by applying to a college of architecture. If he finds that it's not for him, then he really doesn't have any idea what he wants to major in.

Patsmom,
I can't answer your question about your son's chances, but I'll tell you that UNC is my son's first choice. I'll post his stats, and maybe someone with more experience can comment on both of our sons.
SAT 1570 (math 800/verbal 770)
PSAT 222 (sure to be NMFinalist in this state)
GPA > 4.0
Honors courses, but his small school doesn't offer any AP's.
Likely to be valedictorian next year.
Soph class president (hopefully will be sr pres).
Numerous church & community volunteer activities.
Habitat for Humanity.
State winner 2 years in a row for art
Various free-lance art projects
Part-time job
several school activities
white, male, business major, out of state, crossing fingers! (hoping not only for admission, but also for some merit aid, which is not plentiful there).
We'll be visiting UNC in August--any particular advice, anyone?

Dolce-

Not only does your son stand a good shot at UNC, but I think he will be in the running to qualify for some merit aid as well. This coming from a NC citizen. :)

congresssenator, as a UNC student, I agree.
