I received it today. What exactly is it? LOL. Does it look good on college applications?

My daughter received the award last year. I think it's connected to the U of Rochester, with possible scholarship there. She received almost no literature from Rochester, and the award was something to list on other college and scholarship applications. The medal and a few bucks will get you a coffee at Starbucks. By the way, they also give out a Xerox award, and it is just as valuable.

My daughter got this award this week as well which appeared to go the top junior in science in our school. It is through University of Rochester. The letter accompanying the medal says it makes you eligible for their scholarship but you would still have to apply. My daughter does not want to go there so it is a moot point. However, I think this award is well known and therefore recognized, so when you do apply to college, it would be wise to list it as an award/recognition. I think it would look good, yeah. That alone won't put you over the edge in an application but colleges want to hear about any oustanding achievements you have accomplished and this certainly is a recognized one.
Congrats to you.

Okay. Thanks. See, when I received it, it was pretty much rattled off with a bunch of other minor school science awards, so I wasn't sure if it was anything of importance. Thanks guys!

The Bausch and Lomb science award affiliated w/ U of Rochester is only second to the powerhouse science award a high school student can get (besides Westinghouse): the Rensselaer Medal. Very tough to get and very prestigious.

is it really tough to get? --well, it does say : given to 1 outstanding junior... but, i don't know.
what's the rensselaer medal??

Yeah, couldn't have been too tough to get if I got it. LOL. I only scored a 710 on my chemistry SAT II's. I think I got it because my school district has smaller magnet schools in each high school in the district. All of the strongest math/science students go to the medical sciences or sciences and engineering program. Thus, my school, the host of the humanities program, has almost no strong science students.

Our school gives out one Bausch & Lomb award every year to a junior who is an outstanding science student. So, it isn't national like the Westinghouse, and unlike the Westinghouse, it doesn't require any particular research project; still it's a nice award.

The B and L award is great and given to one of the top science students. The RPI medal is given to the junior who is the best at math AND science. That award is very prestigious and tough to get and gives scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst, the oldest technological univ. in the nation. I didn't get it, but I wanted it really badly. My top choices are RPI, MIT, and Caltech.

It isnt any more prestigous than say a University book award, since thousands of high schools aross the nation give out the same award to students each year. It doesnt touch the likes of ISEF, STS, or Westinghouse.
