bump just "bumps" the message up so it's higher on the page so more people see it

...or look at it another way:

When you bump up you own message, it's just like seeing a long line at the checkout in a store---and then going up to the person who's first, and just cutting in. Giving them the elbow helps! You probably wouldn't do that because it's rude.

So, the next time you want to bump up your message (because it is SO much more important than anyone else's) please instead consider adding some small additional comment about you post... something like: "Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I volunteered in the A/V room in 10th grade..."

Actually, that can probably get annoying after a while (take my last WAMC topic, for example ;D)...
