Hey,

I'm a Chinese guy from NC too, and I'l give you an honest assessment.

Your chances are so-so. The SAT may be a bit weak, especially for an Asian applicant. I know some people rejected from UNC at my school that have better stats than you do. Well, my school is a magnet, so some people were bound to get shafted. I believe that UNC is committed to taking the cream of the crop of each NC high school's applicants, so your rank and GPA will help you out. Try to get some good recs and write a good essay, that ALWAYS helps.

Good luck, I'll be applying to Chapel Hill this fall too.

I am applying at chapel hill too! 1500, 4.3 weighted, top 5%. Only difference is that I am out of state, but that makes a big difference at UNC.

what the hell, i thought being chinese could only help my chances of getting in..this aint true?

" thought being chinese could only help my chances of getting in..this aint true?"

If anything, it works against us, because there are SO MANY Chinese (as well as Asian) in college. The only time being Chinese would help would be at a Liberal Arts College, even then it depends.

No... just look at the percentage of asians in any given college. It's always the 2nd, or occassionally 1st highest. It's not going to hurt you TOO much, but it certainly won't help.

ummm so is being chinese worse than being white? perhaps i could say i'm black or somethin in my app.

average GPA for incoming for the class of 2006 was a 4.19 weighted. North Carolina applicants are accepted at about a 50% rate. average SAT for in-state has constantly been around 1240-1260 range. though for out-of-state it's held around 1360--notice this is for enrolled freshmen, not accepted freshmen. out-of-state students have it rough, Roughly 10,000 out-of-state applicants every year(i guess ya'll just love UNC! :) ) and they enroll 18% of 3,500 freshmen from out-of-state. do the math, i'm too lazy right now.

By Themoose07 (Themoose07) on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 06:54 pm: Edit

This year the average admitted SAT (in & out of state) was 1320.

Average SAT for merit aid was 1520.

(Wow!)

Not too shabby for a state school.

Go Tar Heels! Class of 2007

You should get in UNLESS you are from a private or magnet school in Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, or somewhere like that. I was accepted to UNC last year along with 10 other people from my school (a public school in Johnston County). Some of those accepted had SAT scores in the 1100s. I don't know what their class ranks were, and I had a 1370. I think you'll be fine.

I'd say that you have a pretty decent shot (perhaps 50% to 75%)for in-state admission at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Being Chinese-American won't change your odds appreciably up or down. Pretty much the same as caucasian odds.

If you are not a US citizen or permanent green-card resident, then that's a different story. The odds for international students are quite low just about everywhere.

Themoose07,
Could you elaborate more on your statement regarding merit aid for SAT 1520? I'd like to know more about the number and dollar amounts of UNC's merit aid. Do you think they look mostly at academics, or do EC's/volunteering/etc weigh pretty heavily too?
Is there a website you got your info from, or should I just call fin/aid dept at UNC and talk with them?
