Sorry, i forgot to include that last summer, i worked a Cafe for about 12-15/hours a week. I didnt spend any of this money so it will cover all my expenses for the trip to Portugal im taking. I am self-financing this trip.

you look fine for nyu. your stats are above theirs for almost everything. penn...i'm not sure probably 50/50. it might depend on what school you apply to for both also.

By Dream5 (Dream5) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 09:39 pm: Edit

Your chance of getting into any Ivy or the equivalent is not good.

By Shopgirl1805 (Shopgirl1805) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 09:44 pm: Edit

you don't have a chance buddy. I mean your class rank is ONLY 20 out of what, 100,000. I'm sick of the "1600 SAT" people posting their stats and start whining about "Do you think I can get into Harvard with only a 4.million GPA?" Oh boo hoo on you. I feel so sorry for you. Can't you look at the hundred of other posts that match yours and come to a conclusion.

By Dream5 (Dream5) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 09:48 pm: Edit

lol @ shopgirl.

By Reject (Reject) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 10:04 pm: Edit

dream5 u want to elaborate on why my stats are not good enough? Thanks

By Reject (Reject) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 10:06 pm: Edit

By the way, i want to go into pre-med. SO those who thought UPENN wharton were mistaken.

the problem is so many students have your stats (gpa/sat/ec) and better. it's ridiculously competitive especially with the ivies.

can u tell me what i need to improve/stand out

End World Hunger, Find Cure for Cancer, or create World Peace. Good luck.

Haha shopgirl...I agree. I mean I see the point if you have an average SAT score, so so SATII score, etc. and you want to see if you can get in, but why is it that so many 1450+ and 4.5+ GPAs keep posting? I mean, after a certain point, colleges don't care, and it's pretty much up to their own criteria (could be random for all we know).

You know Reject, with such a bad attitude, an obvious lack of sense of humor and people skills, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't make it into college.

By Hahaha (Hahaha) on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 08:04 pm: Edit

hehe,
lighten up Reject. You gotta have a more optimistic name, by the way. lol. Anyways, NYU seems to be a good match for you. Chances for UPENN aren't too great, because i don't see a real passion in your EC's. But if you get awesome recs and write hella good essays, then you have a shot. Good luck, and laugh a little.

By Reject (Reject) on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 04:34 pm: Edit

sorry about the attitude but ive been having some rough days lately and the ball is just not rolling my way (speaking figuratively) Keep the posts coming. The reason by ECs are not focused is becuase i am trying to aim for a more well-rounded approach like having abilities in not only a math/science related area.

By Nealyac (Nealyac) on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 10:17 pm: Edit

what do you mean those are so so sat2 scores? those are really good ones. In The Princeton Review Guide to the Best 331 Colleges, 2001 edition NYU had an average score of a 1334 for the sat and U.Penn was a 1392.

I understand why so many people are saying your chances aren't great. I'm sure you're a dedicated person who's talented and well rounded, but you certainly appear to be a "college resume padder". I guess for me the traveling to Portugal thing and traveling to Alaska make you seem...well a little to eager to add things to your college app.

Try to make yourself a more focused person, because for college admissions, being too well rounded is a detriment.

By Quarky (Quarky) on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 - 08:52 pm: Edit

Holy cow, reject. You need to chill and stop using vulgar vocabulary. Better brush up on those SAT words that gave you at least a 690 verbal (ooh, that's so low, so it is definitely worth it to retake it... note the sarcasm). LOL@you

By Reject (Reject) on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 - 09:40 pm: Edit

Thanks for the both positive/negative comments. Going to collegeguy. if my resume seems to be "college padding" can u suggest an EC that i can do that will not show this flaw. I mean, uniqueness is everything in the admissions process so i do not want a run of the mill EC suggestion. Please if u have anything, say it

Grades and class rank are a little too low. Probably ok for NYU. Penn is 50/50. Both schools seem to be realistic for you.

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 08:39 pm: Edit

Applying ED to Penn increases your chances there considerably. I know two people with very similiar stats, ecs and class rank who applied ED to Penn and both now attend. Your recommendations and essays will be very important.

You're probably pretty safe at getting into NYU, depending on which school you're applying to there.

By Vanilatwist (Vanilatwist) on Thursday, June 05, 2003 - 05:36 pm: Edit

Hi reject, I got into Penn last December on ED, and your Ecs are way better than mine, and your grades are pretty good. My best advice to give you for the Penn Admissions process (I have spoken to the people that read my apps since then) is to be unique and show your personality. I know it sounds cliche to "think outside the box," but really try to think differently than anyone else. I played up my role as fronting my own band in leiu of ECs like starting food drives and other common activities. Other admitted kids told me the officers liked that they put on there that they had modeled. (My other friend that was admitted told me he has a theory that UPenn lets in good-looking non-minorities. I'm not adding my opinion on that, but put in a good pic w/ the app, it couldn't hurt!) Also, your house-building stuff sounds nice!

By Quakerboy2 (Quakerboy2) on Friday, June 06, 2003 - 07:57 pm: Edit

Don't worry about what the rest say about your class rank. You're solidly top 10%, and while that may not be the best, I got into M&T at Penn, and I'm not in the top 10%.

Barely.

11% percentile...

I'm not bitter...

Yeah, good luck and stuff!

By Bnp182 (Bnp182) on Sunday, June 08, 2003 - 05:50 pm: Edit

Quakerboy2:

I really want to do the M&T at Penn but I am not sure about my chances. Can you post you stats so I can see if I have a shot. Thanks. Also, did you get in ED?

By Quakerboy2 (Quakerboy2) on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 01:29 am: Edit

Sure, here are my stats. I didn't apply early decision, just regular.

School: One of those private schools that has good connections to Ivies.

GPA: 92% unweighted, 94% weighted (5 As, 1 B each year)
SAT I: 790/790 math/verbal
SAT IIs:
-Physics - 800
-Math IIc - 800
-Chemistry - 780
-Writing - 730
-English Lit - 680

APs:

Sophmore: Physics - 5

Junior:
Chemistry - 5
Computer Science A - 5
French Language - 4
History (No class - just took the AP) - 3

Senior: Biology, French Literature, and BC Calc
I don't have the grades yet, but probably 5,4,5

Rank - My school doesn't do rank, but I'm about 12th out of 96. I was reported as top 20%.

ECs: I'm not going to list everything, just the important stuff...

7 years boy scouts - Eagle Scout, lots of leadership positions. For example, I was chosen as a leader of a troop that was pulled from the best scouts in my area (about 1,500 scouts). I was also chosen as one of the first to help run an adult leadership training course (1 of 7 scouts, chosen from a pool of 10,000 scouts in my county). Yeah, and an awesome rec (I read it - it was nice) from my Scoutmaster, a Penn alum.

4 Years of theater in supporting roles. Meaning - I played a character with a name and lines, but not a major lead. Side note: I'd have liked a lead, but my competition included one guy who is going to Juliard next year. He's...um...pretty good.

2 Years president of Improv acting club.

AMC index - 112 last year.

OK, that's about all that's important. Oooo, yeah..special things....
1) I'm a legacy.
2) I showed a huge amount of interest in Penn. Apparently, they really weight the number of visits you do, the questions you ask, so on and so forth. (I think it's called "vested interest".) I did two interviews - one b/c I'm an alum, then one when they asked for an one in the regular round.
3) A member of the Penn admissions committee (nobody that senior) applied for a job at my school this fall. Maybe they tried to let more kids in than normal this year.
4) Bad thing - 4 people got in ED from my school. That's good, in the sense that my school has a good relationship with Penn, but they couldn't let many more in regular because they took so many early. 3 on academics, one on lacrosse.

Yeah...that's about it. Good luck, and I'll check back if you have any more questions.

By Bnp182 (Bnp182) on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 - 04:31 pm: Edit

Quakerboy2, I have been reading over the application for the M&T program and it has a question about why do you want to do it. What kind of stuff did you write in that essay to show your interest. Did you put a lot of facts about the school or show that you knew a lot about it Or did you just talk about why the program suits your needs and not really go in much depth about the actual University?? What other schools did you apply to and how did you do in their admissions? Could you just give me some advice about appying to the M&T program, what I should do, what I should not do---Thanks!!
