Discus: What Are My Chances?: May 2003 Archive: Chances with just good standardized test scores
By Utop114 (Utop114) on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 - 07:27 pm: Edit

My class rank is 45/400. My Extracurriculars are decent. I won a few awards. My SATs are 1500. I made National Merit and have 3 SAT 2's above 720. Can I get into a top 50 school?

I m sure u can get into a top 50 school, there is no doubt there, but if you want to try for the top 5 or top ten, then you never know.

How much impact do grades and class rank have on you admission compared to SAT scores. Who would be considered a better candidate. A student with straight A's in Math and a 700 on his Math 1 or 2 SAT 2 or a student who gets B's in Math but has a 750 or above on his math one or two SAT 2.

Grades are always the single most important factor in admissions. I think you have a good hcance at schools like UVA, NYU, that range, just outside the Top 20 type

grades are definitely more important than scores, for grades show ur progress over 4 years while SAT only shows that one time performance.

Yeah, grades are probably more important. But schools outside the top 20 or so would be very happy to accept your 1500 and NM status, fo sheezy.

hmmmmmmm,

hate to pop bubbles.

Isn't it true that the numbers get you into consideration and then ECs or distinctive awards get you in?

Of course it's a bit of both ( and i commend you on those nice scores!), so if your ECs really are decent then i say you have a good shot at the top 50.

utop, fender doesn't know what he/she is talking about.
A) SAT are only one factor in admissions, activities, and grades are very important too.
B) Try to get yourself into the top 10% of your class
C) UVA is 5x as hard to get into than NYU if you do not live in Virginia (I have a 1500 and am in top 5% of my class with an alumnus rec and going ed to uva, and i only think i have about a 60% chance.)
D) SAT scores are important, but cannot make or break you

Can i get into a top 20 college ( i know its a reach) if i have a top 10% of class at a inner city public high school.

Once agian my stats 1500 on SAT, 3 SAT 2's above 720, national merit, decent ec's, few awards, and volunteer at foodbank since 10th grade.

"Grades are always the single most important factor in admissions."

Not true. If you plan on attending a UC school in California (UB Berkeley is top 10), SAT II's are more important. Twice as important as SAT I even.
