Some of the advice I've seen given to internationals on CC has surprised me. Do schools really limit internationals? My sister's husband has been offered a job in Canada, and she has a daughter a year away from applying. She won't need financial aid. How will applying from Canada effect her?

Your niece is an American, right? An American who will have lived in Canada one year? Shouldn't be any problem, IMO. She won't be an international applicant. She will be considered like any other expat American.

As Coureur said, if she's an American, she'll apply as a U.S. citizen not as an international. In any case, even as an international from Canada would not have much effect if she's qualified to be admitted anyway. Much of my family lives in Canada, and we lived there for many years. In fact, my D3 is applying to several Canadian universities so she's going in the reverse direction. I think what you'll find is that very few Canadians attend U.S. colleges because the difference in cost is simply far too steep. The majority who do are very top students who are receiving significant merit awards, athletic recruits, and smart children of wealthy families who can afford to pay full freight. I wouldn't let this issue influence their decision as to whether or not to take the job. Canada is a wonderful place to live. I may consider returning if things don't change in Washington on Nov. 2. :)
