Discus: Parents Forum: 2004 Archive - Part 2: Chances for first-gen college student...
By Irock1ce (Irock1ce) on Monday, September 20, 2004 - 09:57 pm: Edit

I will be first-generation college student. I immigrated here when I was 6 from China and came here extremely poor. My hook would probably be my essay. It’s about how I named myself when I was 6 after a body of water…. I didn’t really know this until it was a little too late. Also, my essay is up on a different topic in this same place.. its called "My edited essay..." or something.

And im applying to:
Stanford EA , Harvard,Yale,Princeton,MIT,Columbia
, Penn(Wharton), UCs. I know i probably dont have any match schools, but i am perfectly happy with going to a UC if i do not get into one of my original 7.

Long-form Info

Extracurricular Info
1. Key Club President 10-12
*Biggest club at H.S. of 3100 people. Most well-known and recognized. We won 3rd most improved club last year and have many events going on.
2. ASB Treasurer - 12th grade.
*In the past, the Treasurer has always been known to do literally nothing. This year, I am about to change all of that by making the school give us more responsibilities.
3. Asian Pacific Islander Committee- Public Relations Chair - 10-12
*We are the only fully student run organization on the westcoast that does this. We organize an asian festival that celebrates asian culture and heritage.
4. Young Musicians Program - Piano, Clarinet 9-12. Been playing Piano for 10 years, Clarinet for 7.
*very selective full scholarship music program at UCB
5. Youth and Government - National Issues Commission Chair last year. Will be running for either chair again or Presidient Commissioner- 3rd year
6. Maverick Institute - Founding Member.
*Only Youth think-tank around. (maybe world?). We have finished writing legislation and amending several laws relating to aquaculture. We will most likely publish them later in the year.
7.Gen Dean Local Chapter president - 11th grade.. until he lost in the primaries.
8. JV Football - Freshman + So. year
9. National Honor Society - Generic.
10. National Merit - Commended (missed semi-finalist by one point)
AP Tests -
Biology - 5
Calculus B/C - 5
Statistics - 5
Chemistry - 4

Approx. 200-300 hours of volunteering.
My school only has 3 honors classes (all math), and does not rank or weigh our GPAs. But we have plenty of AP tests and my weighted GPA is weighted by almost only AP Classes.

Senior Schedule -
AP Physics C
AP Literature
AP Economics / AP Government
Math 53/54 M/H at UCBerkeley (Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra)
Math TA

Most of my Bs that I have received are from Freshman year. (4 Bs in freshman year, 2 Bs in combined Soph+jr year) So without freshman year, my Unweighted GPA is about a 3.94.

Schedule is without a doubt one of the most rigorous at my High School.

Other Info
School size - 3100
Considered most diverse High SChool in the United States. We have 5+ people going to Stanford every year.

Recommendations will be decent- considering one of my teachers told me I was the most talented student hes ever had.
