I know a guy in my class that's attending York. He was choosing between York and the University of West Virginia, and he loved the close, intimate feel of the campus. He also enjoyed how accessible the staff was and how friendly the students were. He said ultimately it was a no-brainer.

Also do a search in this area of CC - within the last 3 months a parent posted a report of a visit to York.
Fendergirl - I'd be interested in hearing your impressions about York. Would someone who is not very religious or not christian feel comfortable there? It's hard to tell from the web site.

this is my final year (yay for being a senior) and i will be graduating in May.
the campus isn't all that religious. if you are religious, there is a chapel that holds church services. there also are a few clubs - newman club which is for catholics, innervaristy which is for christians, stuff like that. i know many people that do go to the church services every week, but also i know a lot that don't. it's really not that big of a deal.
some people say that 'there's nothing to do' in york cause its not a big "city", but if you try to get involved with things, it's a great place to be. i'm part of Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for the needy. although it is technically a religious organization, we let anyone join... because its not fair to say that only christians can build homes! we go down to florida for spring break, to work on building a home there, and get to meet the future homeowner and whatnot, it really is a great organization and i fully urge anyone who is able to join..regardless of what university/college
penn state york is about 5 minutes away, and some of my friends and i go there and are members of some of their clubs, which i think is a great thing, because not all schools allow students from other colleges to be in their clubs. also some members of their school come to our campus for clubs and activities such as tae kwon do club.
york as a city.. if you look around, there are things to do. a few malls, clubs/bars/places to h ang out, one thing i really enjoy, there's a theater called the strand/capitol which is about 15 minutes driving from campus. they have very amazing plays, shows, performances, concerts there and the tickets aren't badly priced.
the campus is located in "downtown" york.. on campus it's very pretty, lots of trees, flowers, a fountain, etc. off campus, well it's like any downtown, theres a few rows of homes, and then you get down into the shops and stuff like that. i wouldnt reccomend walking around after dark by yourself, but that's just me - i wouldn't even do that here - i'm paranoid
as far as classes - i don't believe i've had a class yet with more than 30 people.. last semester i believe i averaged about 15 people in my classes.. some smaller, some a bit larger.. ive had one or two teachers that i didnt care for, but for the most part they've all been great. they have been very understanding and helpful with everything.
as for the dorm life, i lived in an all girls dorm freshman and sophomore year, and then moved into a 4 person apartment on west campus. this year i'll be in a 5 person apartment on west campus, it should be fun. everyone was always very friendly, by the end of the first week i knew everyone on my floor and the flow beneath me. most dorms are coed by floor.. girls floor, guys floor, girls floor, guys floor, etc.. the dorm rooms are pretty decently sized.. the newer dorms have very nice furniture. the on campus apartments such as my own come furnished, but its nice to take your own stuff to make it feel more like home..
hope that this helped.. any other questions?

Fendergirl,
First - congratulations on making it to senior year! I wish I had had the chance to talk with you before our recent visit to Pennsylvania colleges - my daughter nixed York because she got the impression from its web site that it was "too religious." We drove right past York without stopping. Sigh.
But thanks for the great report - what are you majoring in and what are your plans for after graduation?

Candi - that's West Virginia University, not the University of West Virginia. But onto York.... We visited York College in early summer. It's a nice sized private college with a public school price. I went with another Mom and our two kids, hers a rising senior and mine a rising junior. I hate to say it, but I didn't even notice the chapel.
Very nice looking campus. They were renovating the library when we were there and it's going to look great. Classes are all taught by prof's - no ta's. Merit aid available for students with SAT's over 1200. Just overall a nice LAC. oh, and both of our kid got a coupon for a waiver of the application fee after an interview with the counselor.

Sorry Kathiep -- I should have remembered that it was you who visited York!!!

the chapel isn't up where the classrooms are, it's down closer to the athletic fields.. i dont know if you would have went over towards the dorms, but it's up that way on a hill.
yeah, like she said.. no ta's, just profs. I can't wait to see the library once it's done. i move back in on sunday, i can't wait!
as far as what to do when i graduate, i am not really sure where i'll end up. ive had an internship at home this summer, and i'm going to continue to work there during weekends (friday saturday and sunday) till the end of october. i could definately use the money
i plan on attending job fairs and whatnot at school this year, we'll see what i find. i'm a business major .. with minors in information systems, photography and visual communication.. all business admin majors have to choose a business minor(mine being IS).. as like an area of concentration, and the classes for photography and viscom sort of overlap, so it's a nice array of classes. i also have been doing some web design work on the side for some extra money, so i may do something with that if i can find a nice job in that field. i sort of got offered a job in virginia, but we'll see about that when i'm closer to graduating
