My daughter is taking French I in hs this year. Her teacher has suggested that they purchase tapes so that they can practice proper pronunciation. Does anyone have any experience with a good set of tapes?

She can learn a lot about pronounciation for free by going to this Radio France site, clicking on the "ecouter" part of "journal du jour" on the right, and also clicking "lire" so she can follow the text as they read.

She also can try repeating sentences after the announcers, a technique that people whom I know who are good at languages say is very helpful for pronounciation.

When it comes to tapes, I have a lot, and the most effective is, I think, "Learn french in your car." I like it because it stars with individual words. The person on the tape says the word, you say the word, and then the person on the tape says the word again.

From there, you go to hearing and repeating sentences of increasingly long length.

My problem with most such tapes is that they don't repeat the word after you have said it so you don't know whether you've said it correctly. They also start out with sentences that are too complicated.

Many years ago, I watched a set of videotapes "French in action" on PBS. These were produced for college students and showed how the language is used in everyday situations. Would these be appropriate?

French in Action is GREAT! They are what is used for intensive French at Yale (where they were developed) and at Smith and couple of dozen other places. There are also CDs - which are great! I used them in the car, and books that go with it.

(And now for an ad: we have the entire set, in virtually mint condition - if my d. decides she is doing Italian rather than French, they will be for sale. If interested, write me privately - I suspect from experience that when I announce them elsewhere, they will go fast.)
