My son just got accepted to NYU and is thrilled. The only problem is I have heard horror stories about the social life at NYU. Are there a lot of people who become lonely in the city or Do most kids assimilate to NYU?

Dan, I can't speak about NYU's social life specifically, but I am familiar with Columbia. I think the New York City students are far less reliant on campus activities for their social life than schools in rural areas or even other cities. This outward-looking focus may reduce campus socializing, but the kids still seem to develop lots of friends via classes, dorms, and ECs. The student body may seem less cohesive because everyone isn't looking forward to the big game, the big dance, or whatever, but NYC also provides an unparalleled playground and learning experience. Congrats to your son!

there are lots of clubs, music, sports and science activities at NYU. However, I remember there being a fair number of commuter students.
