Since I'm not buying any this year, thought I'd pass on the info -- LLBean has x-long twin flannel sheets on sale for $11/sheet (flat or fitted). I bought my D flannel sheets there last year (also on sale) and they are very good quality. Go to their website, click on the Sale link, then click on "Home," then "bedding." Colors are discontinued ones, but if your kid (like mine) couldn't care less what color the sheets are, it's a good deal (half price).

Rhonda, apparently your D's dorm wasn't overheated like many I'm hearing about. (Parents of)current college students, what weight blankets do you use in your dorm throughout the winter?

oh yeah good point definitely over heated
bed bath and beyond for high thread count count xl sheets
she has two down throws that I got at costco for blankets
noot as big as a blanket but she used to to snuggle in , while doing homework in the common room in winter
also those boyfriend pillows ( with back and arms) are well used

Actually, her dorm was warm enough that I don't think she used the sheets. But who knows what next year's dorm will be like... I only bought one fitted flannet sheet for her last year, no flat sheets, and we had plenty of pillowcases. As you can imagine, her sheets were not exactly a matching set, which she didn't care about anyway.
As for blankets, she has a synthetic down blanket (real feathers make her sneeze), plus a cotton quilt (lightweight), plus a cotton thermal blanket. I don't think she uses them all at once, lol, but diff weights as weather changes.

Check out Domestications on line. They carry many twin xl sheet sets, mattress pads, etc My D choose the jersey sheets because they were soft and indestructable. The down throws at Costco are a great size, very portable.

I've heard the jersey sheets (those are the sheets made of t-shirt material, right?) can be a problem b/c they take a long time to dry in the dryer, if they're all-cotton. Never tried 'em myself, so don't really know firsthand.

JC Penney catalogue on line.

I always went with JC Penney's cuz I could just buy the bottom sheet--never bothered with a top sheet. Better to just give them a cheap comforter and a blanket. My kids really love those soft throws, the fuzzy type of things and I have given them those as Christmas/B-day gifts. One that coordinates with the bedding would be just fine. The bottom sheet is just a pain I have found.
Nice price on the LL Bean sheets. Will take a look. Don't like flannel or jersey. Quick to dry, none nub cotton has always been my pick.

One thing I noticed when I visited Princeton and Yale was the temperature inside the buildings. We were there on beautiful, warm spring days and I thought I would suffocate in the buildings. What are dorms like in these areas? How do people sleep if it is that warm? Of course, here in California we have the opposite problem. Every building is cold enough to hang meat in. What's wrong with an even 72 degrees or so?

My daughter's college has regular twin beds, not extra long. Be sure you get the right size sheets for your school.

I just bought an XL dorm set at Linens and Things.
(Comforter XL and XL Sheets). They also had XL mattress pads. They had a good selection of XL sheet sets for $19.99.

My daughter used the jersey sheets and liked how they felt. She never mentioned that they took more than the usual time in the dryer but who knows how often she actually washed and dried her sheets.

DS's university SAID that the beds were extra long twin...they may have been extra LONG but they were also extra THIN (the beds were not as wide as a standard twin). The x long twin sheets were HUGE, as was the mattress pad and foam egg crate thing. DS did not use a top sheet at all. He had a couple different weight blankets that he used. Dorm was usually hot, but there were times when it was cold too.
