Does anyone know if this is a legitimate honor program or just another money maker. We recently received a letter followed by a packet of info about this conference. NSLC, 111 West Jackson Blvd, Chicago, www.nslcleaders.org. Any experience with this group is most helpful.
Thanks
Kathy

Simple - it's a legit but non-honor program that makes money.

Well, Parental Unit, how do you know that the NSLC is a non-honor program that makes money? Can you show me some evidence why it is a money maker?

I'd say it's non-honor because they are not very selective at all. I don't know about "money maker," but it definetly costs a lot of money. The program comes highly recommended though. Check out the thread on NSLC conferences in the "What are my chances" discussion board. The posts are under "National Student Leadership Conference" and there are some people who have gone or are going to the conference who have posted.

Do you know it's non-profit, Sillyazn? If you do, please substantiate!

I did an NSLC program over the summer. While I have reservations about recommending it to other students, it was fun and it is def. legit!

I think the thing about this program that gives many people pause it not that it isn't legit (in the sense that that they take your money but don't provide a product) but the method they use to recruit. The implication that this is only open to "the best and the brightest" is, in my opinion, deceptive advertising. I don't think it's any worse than some other summer programs that are offered at colleges and universities around the country, I just don't think that it's any better. Furthermore, I suspect that to place any excess emphasis on it in a college application could make a student look naive at best, and stupid at worst.

Please ask NSLC for a copy of their IRS Form 990 -- If they are a non-profit as they claim, they will provide it immediately and you will be able to review their complete financial picture. However, my past request was ignored.... so I assume the worst.

NSLC is just like all the other youth programs (NYLF, NYLC). Just because they are a "non- profit" doesn't really tell you anything. The owners of the for-profit organizations that are hired by the non-profits almost always connected.
Ask tough questions, who formed the non-profit and who formed the vendor in charge of your kids.
By the way, all of these organizations are lerking on these boards...in some cases using fake names to influence all of you and tear down their competition. I suspect Parental Unit is one of them. How's business Parental Unit? Is your China Program filling?

Yes, I happen to agree with caboose. I also attended a Law and Advocacy Session in Washington D.C. It is completely legitamite because you cannot simply apply without anyone acknowledging that you are good enough to attend. The program asks teachers and guidance councilors to select the students that they feel best fit the roles. There is of course the nominate friends for discount, furhter leading the burden of quality on the person who nominates. Of course this system is prone to a few people that fall through the cracks. -Colin
