I thought about posting this question in the high school life and pre college issues board but i thought responses could get ugly so i'm posting it here.

I have heard all about how exeter is much more conservative than andover... is that really the case politically, or is the school just more conservative in the sence of dress code saturday classes etc.? What do you think would be the predominant political view at either of these schools?

You might want to grab a stack of student newspapers from each school and comb through them. This might help you glean a little more info on this subject.

good idea, thanks.

You can also get an idea from the list of student clubs.

I don't know about the clubs. I seem to recall that "conservative" Exeter had a wiccan club on their website!

You need a code to log onto the Exonian but once you revisit, you can pick up a few back issues, even subscribe.

I go to a boarding school similar to, but not quite as well known as Exeter and Andover. Most of the prep schools are pretty liberal. When Andover held an "election" for the 2000 presidency, Al Gore took over 50% of the vote, even though Bush attended Andover. Andover is clearly liberal, and I've heard that Exeter is not quite as much. However, Exeter is not exactly headquarters for the Young Republicans. The lightbulb joke for Exeter goes like this: How many exonians does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: 20 students, of all different ethnicities and backgrounds, to screw it in in unison.

Both schools will have liberal and conservative students who will both debate eagerly and know their stuff. No matter what your inclination, there will be both people who agree with you and those who are willing to spend hours proving you wrong.

Queen-

What are you looking for? Conservative or Liberal?

By Nemom (Nemom) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 09:59 am: Edit

There is also conservative/liberal in non-political areas - dress code, chapel attendence, school behavior rules, dating, etc.

thanks so much for the feedback... i consider myself to be pretty liberal politically but i dont mind being conservative in non-political areas like nemom said above.

farrahday, what school do you go to?

By Cfunkexonian (Cfunkexonian) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 03:19 am: Edit

As a student at Exeter, I can say with full certainly that the vast majority of Exonians (75-90%) are liberal. However, the conservative crowd is very vocal on campus and tends to stick together, which may give the sense of there being a more conservative environment. Yes, none of the boarding schools in NE are very conservative.
