I am currently a junior in high school, but the matter of thank you notes to teachers who write recs has already begun to cross my mind. I've applied to a few summer programs and institutes (though no colleges yet) and had teachers write recommendations, either letter or those check-box forms, for me.

However, I was wondering if I should send a short note after every application I give them, or if I should wait until sometime senior year.

I want to express my gratitude for the time they have taken, but it seems a little akward to write a thank you every few months, especially when I know I will have to ask for more during senior year.

Also, when exactly during one's senior year should such notes be sent? After ED/EA apps are sent out? After RD? After decisions have been received? Close to graduation?

It seems to me that one sincere letter sent close to graduation would be able to encompass all of my experiences with a teacher would be best.

Are there any taboos or preferences when it comes to this topic?

It's good of you to think about the proper etiquette. If you fear awkwardness, ask yourself: how many times would you ask your parents, siblings, friends, or anyone else to perform a service before you would think it appropriate to thank them? I assume you thank them every time they make a place for you, pass the bread, etc... On the same principle, I suggest writing a thank you note every time a teacher or guidance counselor does you a favor. Also let them know when you are accepted into the summer programs to which you are applying. It will show proper courtesy and make the teachers and guidance counselors more eager to write further recs later on. And when you graduate, I am sure they will welcome a note of appreciation from you for all they have done.

I think it is also very nice of you to send-thank you notes. You'll probably also be wanting to send thank you notes after you've interviewed at colleges. I think it's always nice to add a personal touch to the thank you note, rather than the stereotyped 'thank you for... blah blah your time was much appreciated.' Being specific about things you really liked is what I think gives thank you's a sincere and personal tone. Anyway, as far as thank you notes to your teachers, I think sending them a thank-you card everytime they do something for you (I think I asked one particular teacher of mine for recommendations at least 5 or 6 times) would be a bit excessive and would take away from the sincerity. In my opinion, a thank you note after the first time, and then just an acknowledged thank you in person for each time after that would be more appropriate. However, I agree with what Marite suggests about keeping your teachers informed and 'up to date' and also that a thank you note at the end of senior year would also be very thoughtful.
Good luck and best wishes!
