Is it just me, or are spring breaks getting more bacchanalian than ever? I can just imagine the proud parents who see their daughter on the cover of the latest video, "Spring Break 2002 - Wild Coeds Uncensored!" Or is it just that the media lets us see more of it?

That's exactly what was spoofed on SNL when a family watching TV noticed their daughter in an ad for "Girls Gone Wild".

The SNL "Girls Gone Wild" thing might not be far from the truth. While searching the Web for college info the other day, I found a site that featured uncensored (is there any other way on the Web?) pics of college women at Mardi Gras. (No, Roger, I'm not including a link here!) I had a daughter in college once, and if I had come across this site and one of these young ladies had been MY daughter, I would have needed some long-term stroke-recovery rehab treatment.

"Girls Gone Wild" is putting it mildly! I kept searching the photos looking for an "S&GU" sweatshirt. (You know, "Sodom and Gomorrah University"!)

There was just an award in a Texas lawsuit. Some girl who became an unexpected "star" in one of these videos sued the producers. She alleged that they paid bar owners in Cancun to ply the young women with liquor. (Therefore, she concluded, it wasn't actually her fault that she took her clothes off in front of a raucus crowd of spring-breakers!) The video guys never showed up in court, and the girl was awarded 5 million bucks. Of course, she's about as likely to collect the 5 mil as she is to retrieve all copies of her small-screen debut...

Sounds like a good example of everyone else being at fault for an individual's dumb behavior. She should have carried a model release with a royalty clause into the bar... :)

Actually, this subject is a little magnfied by commercials and the media attention it's gotten lately. Spring break events have actually calmed down a LOT. It's just that in recent years, people have realized that they could make money off of the behavior of half drunk women. I went to spring break in Daytona and Panama City last year, and nudity probably only consisted of about 20% of the entire vacation.

The commercials and videos make it seem like the only thing that happens at spring break is that people get naked. But that's not true. Because of the reputation that has formed surrounding spring break, police officers are in full force ticketing anyone who attempts to be nude in public. Of course some people still get away with it. But the cops are definitely looking out for it.

All My Children soap opera is sending TWO of its major college age vixens to Panama City this month to search for hunks, so realize that the camera is panning out. They're supposed to be looking for men of substance, but are "perfectly willing" to just find great abs, pecs, and behinds. I never realized until I went to college that some people (young and old) actually planned their class schedules around their favorite soaps. So the unsuspecting could find themselves in need of a General Hospital when the Bold and the Beautiful's Young and Restless view of the TV was obstructed. They were soon apprised that they had only One Life to Live, and we would be allowed to live out all of the Days of Our Lives only if we moved quickly aside. As the World Turns, I remember these experiences with a mixed sense of befuddlement and amusement. Thanks for letting me share!

I won't even ask how the 20% is calculated... :)

When we visited Reed for prospie day ( accepted students recruited), my daughter stayed in the dorms and I spent my time watching cable where shows depicting "spring breaks" at places like South Padre Island, where students could buy package deals that including "entertainment", I didn't see any entertainment that didn't include alcohol.
Another segment illustrated students who had disappeared, yet their parents were not contacted because they were "adults"
This was followed by a documentary on Portland street kids. Needless to say, I had a lot to think about that night

My daughter came home freshman year for spring break as did many kids in her class. THis year, she spent part of it on school led community service projects, and the rest hanging out in Portland.
I don't think most kids spend their whole spring break partying even though the media makes it look that way.
That doesn't even look like fun to me.
I worry about kids who might make dumb decisions under the influence of alcohol.
Besides the students who were killed or injured for life after doing things like jumping from balconies on the college show, a student from my daughters high school is still missing after over a month from Tulane, where he attended an off campus frat party.

Not having a pile of money to blow on Spring Break--or on transportation to come home for the week, my daughter took a well-paying babysitting job for a professor that needed quiet time to write a book. With her meals provided, she was able to sleep in her dorm. She even used her spare time to finish a long piece of fiction she submitted for an English Department writing contest.

While she may not have some hazy memory of Cancun, she reduced the amount of her student debt by a considerable sum.

Morgantruce: It's great to see that not every student feels the need to get drunk and stupid and call it fun under the mistaken guise that they need a break or a reward. Your daughter took care of business and showed a great deal of initiative in tracking down a job which allowed her to contribute to her present and future well-being. Congratulations.
