By Boogieboogie (Boogieboogie) on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 04:49 pm: Edit

I am stuck on the second to the last math question on the psat bulletin. Can somebody answer it in DETAIL??
Thank you....here is the question.
If 8 sqrt 8 = x sqrt y, and x and y are different positive integers, what is the valu of x+y?
Thank you for your help because I'm sure at least one of you out there got this question right!

You can split it up into 8 times square root 4 times square root 2. Square root of 4 is 2, leaving you with:

16 sqrt 2 = x sqrt y

So that's like saying 16 = x and 2 = y, so they could equal 18. I think this is correct?

18 is a correct answer..i got 36...4(sqrt32) which is also a correct answer.
