Discus: SAT/ACT Tests and Test Preparation: Urgent question, how much is too much?
By Pianoman (Pianoman) on Thursday, October 07, 2004 - 08:32 pm: Edit

I am a junior completely confused on what do to with taking the New and Old SAT. I am signed up for taking both the October and November old SAT's and the new one in spring; I thought that this would be ok, but I just started to see the threads in this forum claiming that taking the SAT more than twice is disadvantageous to an application (especially for the ivy's). Is this really true, or do the circumstances for juniors this year provide for an exception?

You can take the SAT as many times as you want.

You send your best score.

That's it. Since you're a junior, it's not really necessary to take the old SAT. As a sophomore, I know that any old SAT I take will not be valid when I apply. I believe the same applies to juniors.

You should take it if you have the money and time. Many schools are willing to take both (I've personally e-mailed over 50) and it looks like most Ivies are willing to take either, except Cornell who was undecided. ALL of the UCs say they will only take the new one, so if you're a UC or bust kind of guy, then don't bother w/ the old one.

I actually read in "A is for Admission" by Hernandez that 3 times is enough. Even if you think you can get a higher grade by taking it 7 times, it's better to spend your time and energy in other areas-- start a club or something.

Fabrizio, you do not send only your best score. Any score you see on your SAT Status/SAT Registration page WILL BE SENT to colleges.

As Slip states, the SAT scorecard sent to the colleges DIRECTLY from the College Board is cumulative....ALL of your scores are one it...All previously taken SAT Is and IIs to date.

During "college night" at my son's school, the guest speaker was an adcome form an Ivy. He said 3X - any more and you look like you are obsessed and have no other interests.
