I´m planning to take SAT Writing, Latin, Chemistry and Math(don´t know which level yet).
What are the best buys for those and which do you recommend for SAT 1 also? So far I´ve only used Barron´s, which was quite good for the Math section.

For the SAT I, I recommend the College Board's "10 Real SAT's."

I believe the College Board also has a "real" tests book for the SAT II's.

Besides the 10 REAL SATs, it's a good idea to get a study guide that can help with strategy. Princeton Review has one called Cracking the SAT, I'd get that. It comes with some practice tests on CD, and they explain the answers so you know why you got things right or wrong. Best to go through the guide before taking lots of practice tests, so you don't repeat the same mistakes without knowing why.

I think they have some SAT II prep books too - if your local Barnes & Noble is big enough, they should have most of the ones available so you can dig thru them. If not, check out Amazon.

As mentioned above, Cracking the SAT and 10 REAL SATs are a good start.

Is the Princeton Review prep course any good? How much does it raise your score by?

By monica on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 - 01:02 am: Edit

i took it. i think it depends entirely on what your target score it. what's yours, and what's the last score you got on a practice test?

The Princeton Review prep course is awesome. They guarantee you'll be happy with the score, and if not, you can retake their course for free. The instructors are great, the classes are actually kinda fun, and the materials are very, very good.

I'm in 11th. class and i want to start preparing for SAT examination. please let me know the dates of examination and which books should i refer to.

Rishabh Bhatia, you can find out the testing dates for the SAT on the College Board's website (www.collegeboard.com). For prep books, it seems as though the members of this discussion board recommend the Princeton Review, Kaplan, and/or Barron's study guides. However, there are other fine prep books out there. Go to your local library or bookstore; you would probably find a nice selection of prep books for the SAT.

3000 vocab words are the equivalent of a dictionary, it takes a few weeks to study

My son thought the Kaplan books were excellent because they gave explanations for the answers, not just the correct multiple choice letters. He used them for his SAT II's and scored above 750 on all of them. He had used other books previously for his SAT I's and found that they were not as good.

The Princeton Review SAT tests on CD also give complete explanations for all of the answers, and help you identify areas of weakness, so you can probably choose either book and be just fine.
