Out of a poll of 2,000 voters concerning a proposition to build a new highway, 42% were in favor, 28% were opposed, and 30% were undecided. All 2,000 voters actually voted in the election, and those who favored or opposed the proposition in the poll did not change their minds. If the undecided voters voted for or against the proposition in the same proportions as those who were decided, how many of the 2,000 voters voted against the proposition?

That is correct Benzinspeicher. By the way, I have relatives that live up in Massachusetts. They live in Bridgewater, Kingston, Quincy, Cohasset, and Middleboro.

pretty sure it's 800
total decided=70%
decided against=28% (28/70)=40% of decided is against
40% of undecided 30%=12%
12% + 28% = 40% undecided total
40% of 2000 = 800 voters

prove me wrong

None of my relatives live in the Greater Boston area -- however I enjoy visiting the Boston area, especially the shops on Newbury Street. It is quite amusing to look at the "clearance rack" for Armani suits, which sell for \$900 instead of \$1000!

Was it one of the last problems? It seems pretty easy now, but is probably tougher under time stress.

840+x are in favor, 560+y are opposed
x+y = 600
840/560 = 1.5
x=1.5y
y=240
560+240 = 800
